A forum member posted a picture of a purple pot pipe he found by a schoolyard last week. I had never found a pipe, or imagined finding one before seeing that post, but someone else mentioned it was not an uncommon find. Sure enough, I found one today. I went to an estate sale in an old part of town and while I was there, after I'd bought a few items inside, I asked permission to search the yard. Permission granted. It was a small yard and within a few minutes, I had found this pipe and the metal dominos. The pipe was pretty tarnished, I used Tarn-X on it when I got home. It's silver, but there are no hallmarks on it. It's very neatly made. I had a couple of my neighbors over for a drink, showed them my finds, and Ralph the combat-wounded Viet Nam war vet offered me a $100 for it. I told him I still wanted to show it off to some friends and family. He was worried I'd sell it to someone else, but I assured him I wouldn't.

I have found pipes before but never one like that. Its very unusual but I think for 100 bucks I would sell lol. The dominos make sense in Miami. I remember the Cubans always playing dominos outside.

I think when Ralphie is sober he'll make a more modest offer. My other neighbor told him $20 would be more like it.

My purple pipe I posted the other day sure got a lot of attention. Most remarks were about the social unjust or legalization of smoking pot instead of my finds but that's cool. Anyway, your pipe looks much older and I'm not very knowledgeable about pipes but in my opinion it doesn't seam to have the same negative feel to it as the one I found. Your pipe screams cool conversation piece and mine says..pot smoking stoner..

Thanks! You made me laugh. I do have to agree with you, however. I think it may be because it's skillfully handcrafted and has an interesting shape and design, and being silver rather than anodized aluminum helps. I wasn't even really sure what it was until Ralph wrapped his big paws around it and immediately tried to light it up, hopeful there was some burn-able residue left in the "bowl". He recognized it for what it was immediately.

That is a beautiful piece :o
If it is as large as it appears and sterling, $100 isn't out of line..

it weighs about .48 oz., or 13.25 grams (that would be like a very large ring). The ball has a diameter about that of a quarter. The metal is pretty thin, much thinner than a coin, maybe like a tin can.
Sterling value alone would be about $15 or so. But, it's not marked sterling so I'd have to test it. However, for an aficionado of the exotic smoking arts, or a collector if there be such...it may be worth rather more than the sterling value.

yes. people definitely collect smoking pipes. we are the smoking capital of the planet. Yes for legal tobacco and illegal pot.

that one might be a opium pipe. althought the "carbarator" hole in the side might make one think grass pipe.--being a far east merchant marine sailor you tend to see such things.

The "bowl" portion of it looks small for pot, unless it was used for Hash. Almost looks like a whistle. Cool find regardless.

I believe you live in Miami like myself. The pipes that I find are crack pipes. You could be arrested if it has enough residue in it. I throw them away as fast as I can but this one is different. I have never seen this type before but Im not up on the latest drug craze. :dontknow: If lost in the 60s-70's its a pot/hash pipe, if lost in the 80's its a cocaine base pipe, 90's or later its a crack pipe. :(

Are you sure its a pipe? Have you tried to whistle with it. Is that a loop for hanging on a necklace?
Im starting to agree, its too small for pot. It may actually be an antique. If its an antique, the rare possibility exists that its a heroin tar pipe.

Is there screen in the top?

Just to be safe you should use alcohol to remove any possible residue.

I'm thinking it looks more like a whistle too, the first thing that came to mind when I looked for some reason was a bosuns pipe, but it's not the right shape......don't know why I thought that :icon_scratch:

Wouldnt it be funny if his drug induced neighbor tried to smoke a whistle? :(

I was thinking boatswain too because of the loop.

I'd gladly watch someone try to smoke out of a whistle ;D

I really think what you have here IS a whistle, probably a two pitch. If it is it should make two different sounds depending on if you cover the side hole or not. If you have a dog see if it reacts to the thing.

You might have a hunter's whistle, two pitches for calling dogs/hunters...... Still looking for a match.

This is an interesting little item. I would think a drug pipe would have to have a screen inside the bowl on top. If it doesnt have a screen, it would be a great item for the "What Is It" board..

It doesn't whistle, it's definitely a hash pipe. You could put a small screen in the "bowl", but a screen is not really necessary. The aperture into the bowl at the bottom of the top tube is only about 2mm wide, probably a bit smaller than your average tobacco pipe aperture (you can see an arc of it in the photo). And remember, hash is solid, something like a ball of gum.

I was concerned about the possibility of residue in it too. I don't want to get busted some day. I wonder how I can reliably clean it. Do you think alcohol can really dissolve any and all residue in it?
