Dug my first 1 Reale this morning from the freshly plowed farm field after getting chased off yesterday by the strawberry flies and gnats. I can only make out 17?? on the date.:dontknow: Nonetheless, the coin is in pretty good shape for its age and my silver streak is still intact. HH.:occasion14:

I did try the foil method. It still has the detail but you can't see it that well in these pics. Thanks again for the tip Erik :icon_thumleft:MDing Finds .003.JPGMDing Finds 002.JPG

IMO: 1797 1/2 R Carlos IIII Mexico City mint 18 mm diameter and .896 fine silver. I read a '9' in the date (straight edge to right side of number; an '8' would have a inward curve on the right side and a horizontal 'line' would bisect the number. I also see four vertical lines after 'Carolus', signifying Carlos IIII (1788-1808).
If I'm wrong, I"ll blame it on the Merlot.

Don.......

You're welcome. You can use the aluminum foil several times and then finish up with a bit of baking soda to make the coin look nice...of course it will be harder to photograph, but should look much better in person than a black coin. :icon_thumright:
