Looks like 1787. Great find!

Looks like 1787 or 1789. Very nice, clean by wetting it and wrapping it tightly in aluminum foil a few times till while it still gets warm and smells like rotten eggs. Then rub a bit of baking soda and water on it with you fingers. It'll clean up nice! (then invite me down for a hunt for the great tip! :laughing7: :occasion14:) Congrats on your first Real!!

nice find! 1700s silver is such a treat to pull from the ground. I think it's a half real though, no?

Thanks everyone! Looking at it a little closer it does look like a 1787.

Thanks for the tip Erik. Will that method remove any of the detail that it has now? You would have to be hard core to come down here and deal with these flies and gnats. Although, they are only around for a few weeks then the mosquitos, then green heads. Its a vicious cycle of irritating insects. :cussing:

Great coin Butch!!:occasion14:...Bought a new can of bug spray on the way home today had to put a 2nd coat of spray on after you left...man they came out hard

Nice going on Reale, it's still one high on the want list for me.

The aluminum foil trick will not damage the coin, but just remove the ugly black layer of tarnish that accumulates on old silver. You should have seen how black my William III sixpence lovetoken was when it came out of the ground in England! The aluminum foil cleaned it right up after 2 or 3 applications. Don't rub the foil on the coin, just wet the coin and wrap it in aluminum foil tightly, pressing down with your fingers. You will feel it getting warm...this means it's working. Afterwards wash coin with mild dish soap and water and I use a soft toothbrush.Use a little baking soda slurry with your fingers to remove any stubborn tarnish.

That's REALLY cool! Get it? Ha ha ha. Nice find, bad pun on my part. Looks like 1787 to me

Thanks again everyone. I'm going to give it a shot then post pics after.

1787 1/2 Real Mexico City Mint. My 1st as well! WTG!

I second what Erik says... you have to invite us North Jersey guys down south! :laughing7:

Congrats on a great coin. I'm still looking for my first.

As for the flies, in general Repel with extra deet works great. However, it had the opposite effect on the beach for me. Those stinging flies seem to have a thirst for it! Some locals told me skin so soft does the trick. Else, long pants and long sleeves, and get a mosquito net head thing from LL Bean. You may look goofy, but well, you're metal detecting, so you ALREADY look goofy!
