So I don't have to tell anybody on the east coast just how terrible this winter has been. Lots of my new sites are still buried in snow and the others are still frozen. I told my crew that we were going to start working four ten hour days and taking three day weekends. Today was beautiful and sunny but I had a bunch of errands to do. Finally around 4 I was able to get to the one site that's a little bit thawed out. This site is about dead last on my list but after 4 or 5 months I couldn't wait to get there.
My first decent find of the day was a beautifully shaped axe head of some sort. I believe it may have been used for wooden shingles but am sure one of the fine folks on here will straighten me out with id. This was found in an area that I found a couple of early 1800s LCs and am assuming that this would be of similar age. I absolutely love the shape of this big nasty hunk of rusty iron :-)

Most of this site is still frozen so I walked toward the water to a spot that gets sun most of the day. I got a deep signal and dug down about 10 or. 11" inches. All I could see was big round disc with a green patina in the hole. Thought for sure it was an old coin and was pretty psyched. Pulled it out and it had a gold colored face. I had no idea what it was at first but new the patina and depth pointed to something with some decent age.
Had to take off after that and when I got home and gave the back of my round item a bit of a cleaning I could see that there used to be a shank there. So if this indeed a button ( which I assume it must be) it's the biggest button easily that I've ever found. Even bigger than the Tombac I found. The little round designs on the front are made up of several little tiny dimples. I would very much appreciate if anyone has a clue about potential age of this crazy round item. :-)

It was so nice to get out for a bit and it made it even better when I saw 6 mature bald eagles flying around together. Two of them would not separate and flew wing to wing together the whole time. Very cool to see. Sorry bout the pics but they were up there

A good friend of mine that saw this button just sent me this pic of a six pointed Great Seal flag. Exact same configuration as my button. Very cool indeed

Interesting until you dig deeper.

"This single-sided homemade flag likely dates to the period of the Civil War to the Centennial."

"The emblem is representative of the star configuration on the Great Seal of the United States, which consists of a six-pointed star made of smaller six-pointed stars."

The Great Seal stars do not have that configuration.

PS: Maybe the first Great Seal did. Trying to find a good pic.

Sort of interesting, but just common sense I guess. I don't think it makes the case for the button, but does make you think.

"An illustration of a seal is known as a "realization" of its design description. For generations, the Great Seal has inspired artists to create compelling realizations – graphic links to the revolutionary spirit of the people who gave us our freedom."

So it's basically the great seal design turned sideways :-) ok back to the case with a big unknown attached to it. Hopefully the next old item I dig out there will be a coin so I can positively id it, but still happy to start the season with the dandy. Hopefully a sign of things to come. Thanks again for following along and helping out

So what's this design?

Well it made for a much better thread than most buttons on here, even some that we know are good! :laughing7: I'd like to know the answer to this almost as much as you, but it is what it is.

nice finds! gz! :icon_thumright:

Looks like the same as your button when turned sideways. LOL I think I should focus on one thing at a time. But that's cool, it does make it more interesting.

What threw me off was the flag having it sideways.

Remember most GW buttons are large and date from the same decade too, so it really does make a person wonder if that's what the maker had in mind.

Yeah it seems as though it would fit the time frame. I'm gonna pretend mines better than a GW and it's a one of a kind :-)

Then you know what will happen... Aqua will find 7 next week! ... they'll all be ugly, but still kill your rarity. :happysmiley:

Ha ha, well I guess that will leave me no option but to get rid of AQUA! He'd make awesome lobster bait I bet. I will split the buttons with you IP and we can release one every 5 years or so

Catch and release. Catch Aqua, release him to the bottom in a trap, and then release the buttons. Deal!
