Recently I found a site that I believed to be colonial in an area with some
rich history going back to the 1600's. I went there the day before in the pouring rain to get an idea of what the area looked like... it was huge. It had the typical stone walls you see all over New England and lots of woods. To many the stone walls are just some stones stacked in a line, but I always imagine the years of back breaking work it took to make them. These simple utilitarian piles have outlasted most things we will do or accomplish in our modern lives. Back to the quest. There could be anything here! After finding nothing for about two hours i got an iffy signal that I would normally disregard but It was worth a try. After the plug came out while digging I saw a large round object. Of course I thought it was a colonial copper but then I instantly knew I had found my first "dandy" button. It had a perfectly intact shank and had a... dare I say "nipple" in the center with a sunburst pattern and possible remnants of a silver wash. The authorities probably would have thrown me in the stocks for uttering such a wild word in public. Who was this fancy gentleman who was so careless with his 36mm button? Has anyone else in New England found one like this? Thanks for reading! IMG_6284.JPGIMG_6285.JPGIMG_6283.JPG

It's hard to fathom. I moved a stone ledge that was probably 300+ lbs with help from some other people. We dropped it on a guys toe. He's lucky he didn't lose the toe. Now I think of moving thousands of stones some heaver than that. ???? If I could time travel and sell the colonials some steel toed boots I'd be rich.

Hey thank you! Where do you detect out of? I'm in Boston. The amount of trash around here is … well it's believable. I was reading about your gold coin! Congrats!

I share your wonder of stone work and all accomplished in days gone by. Welcome to Tnet from RI. The button is cool. I have not found a dandy button (yet [emoji6]).

Thanks! Took me a pretty long time to find one and I get they idea that they are more common than coppers. I've been on hunts where multiple dandies are found and it made me think I was doing something wrong. I tell you the signal on this one was not very promising. It made me rethink passing by targets. I'd say look out... there is a dandy on it's way to you!

Thanks, xcopperstax! What is a “long time”? There are sooooo many signals, and I tend to dig any repeatable ones even if iron, but iffy ones do make me wonder what has been left behind! I have found a few buttons and a few coppers, but no big “dandy” buttons (yet)...Happy hunting!

I'm coming up on three years of detecting before finding one! Its probably because I was skipping signals that were jumpy and not digging everything. There is a ton of trash pretty much everywhere (live in the city) so I think I got in that mode of trying to skip the trash.
