first outing with the etrac

All quarters, silver or clad, read the same. A CO point up or down is normal for any target actually in the ground. If you haven't seen this, maybe it will help...

Love the straight 12 FE line. Usually dead on accurate.

Thanks Jason. I have a couple of charts I have downloaded. This one might be a little easier to remember. I have learned the penny, dime and quarter readings as I have dug a few of those already, including junk targets like bottle caps, pull tabs, and pop cans. I just have to put more time into the detector to learn the sounds. Pop cans fool me right now, I need to remember the trick of holding the coil a few inches off the ground on those, but if they are shallow enough I stick my lesche in and pop them out just to clean the area up a bit. Its going to be fun learning this machine. After three outings, I see its potential.
I need to set up a test garden with deep coins to get the sounds down. I just know some of my older sites have deep silver i have missed with my other detectors. I have found some mercs and barber dimes at these sites but nothing extremely deep, 6-7 inches tops.

The only "true" readings that vary off the 12 line are halves and dollars. Of course, in ground readings can jump a bit but are usually close.

Jewelry can be all over the place. Small platinum can give a scratchy foil reading! Items with mixed metals will give all kinds of readings. Bad ground can alter all your signals so you have to know your search area before you accept or reject any particular response.

Got to go out for about an hour this evening. I found 9 clad coins and my first silver with the etrac, a small chevron ring. It rang up 14 41and was about 2 inches down. I thought it was a copper penny. Sounded good I would have dug it regardless of the sound hitting solid like it did though. I have found coins in sites I thought wouldn't give up anymore in the past 12 days of having the etrac. It is a winner and the more I use it, the better I understand. Lots of helpful hints on this forum and videos have helped with understanding.

That is the Key right there for the Minelab E-Trac! it will just "click" one day and its all silver from there on out! ;)

I hope so Bart. It is fun to use. I have dug a ton of clad with it already on my old sites I thought were hunted out. No silver coins though. I may have already been lucky enough to get all the silver with my dfx. I am going to research and find some new sites to take it to.

Silver is hard to come by. I would bet ya a cheeseburger that E-Trac will find several silver a dfx would miss. As long as I get to use the E-Trac. lol I ain't gonna miss an opportunity at a free cheeseburger! lol

Went out yesterday, found my first sacagewea dollar along with a cool token that commemorated the 150th year of the county I was hunting in. Some clad as well. One hole I got a 11 47 signal that would jump around a bit but the co numbers stayed in the 40s. Said it as about 8 inches down, dug down that far, nothing. My pinpointer wasn't picking it up. I figured it was something huge and covered it back up. If I could have gotten a chirp from my pinpointer, I would have kept digging. It was hitting solid like a shallow target too, which led me to believe it was something large.

Did it make a signal with the E=trac, both with and without the dirt in the hole? If it's an old site, I think I'd still keep digging until I found out what it was.

Yes it did. But I had removed 8 inches of dirt and the machine was still saying 8 inches, and the garrett pro pointer wasn't picking up anytjing in the hole. I figured it was a much deeper larger object after that.

Yes, that would be a giant object, very deep in the ground.
