Have you looked into values and to how much the entire collection is worth? Not looking to buy, but others, like myself might just like to hear it. 8)

One of my winter projects that I started last month, but got sidetracked on is trying to give a rough minimum and maximum estimated values to my coins and entire collection. Reason, not that I will be selling it, but not to sound downtroaded, but in case something happened to me, that the wife would have some idea of what my holdings are.

I have heard stories of collectors who have passed away and that their spouses, not having any idea as to what the value of the collection was, literally giving away valuable collections for next to nothing. So, with that in mind, I try to keep my DW informed on at minimum which items are valuable and which ones are not.

In general most ground found coins will not be worth much, but there are some big exceptions and I have some of them. Then there are the artifacts, which are really hard to value, but are perhaps the easiest to sell, so I also keep her informed on those items.

I have only started this project and only have done my Half Cents and Large Cents up thru 1813, and value of just those coins comes to 10-18 thousand. There are a few very rare coins in that grouping that accounts for most of that "guesstimate". ( Using MS Excel Spreadsheet)

I am using current auctions for pricing, accounting for condition of my ground founds and also the ones that I have that are rare, have been previously unofficially appraised by some of my friends who happen to be in the auction business or are big time collectors.

I do not use e-bay for valuation of coins, too variable, I prefer using Heritage,Stacks and C4 auction results. I am not sure what to use for artifacts, for them, perhaps e-bay might be the best way to go.

I just wanted to bring this thread back to the top to remind everyone who the king of colonials is. Seriously Don, awesome collection you have there. I was wondering how many you added to the total this year also?

I have added around 42 more to that total since November 2003. I have shared my sites with my oldest son since the early 80's and his collection is a tad smaller but just as impressive, so together we have done quite well as a team in an area that did NOT have a huge population in the 1700's or very early 1800's, and nor were there any big farms nearby, so I consider our finds quite hard to come by, especially since all were found within 30 miles of my home and most considerably close than that.

I have two friends and know of several others who have a thousand or so colonial and pre 1799 era coins each, who do not post on any of the forums, they all live and hunt the area that had very heavy population in the colonial days, the Philadelphia to NYC corrider. (LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION) However, just like Iron Patch has stated, so many of theirs are no dates from the fertilized fields they hunt. I have very few finds from fertilized fields thank goodness.

Good choices Don. Incredible condition on that extreme close up King George. Love the Vermont coppers. They'll probably always be my favorite. My first identifiable large copper was a Vermont......See avatar pic.

Don I'll always have a fond memory of being able to sit down and go through your finds, I only wish I would have had many hours and not the one or two. Maybe someday we can do it again.

Our detecting is similar in some ways and very different in others, but that stuff is great! Our early US or American Colonial finds are pretty slim here but I sure can't wait until I find another. Great inspirational pictures.
