Today was the first real cold day of the winter but what the heck I had time after work so off I went..I thought I would leave the funeral home site for the weekend with some friends so I went to an old park and into the woods I went. deep deep in....anyway got to a spot with some rocks around and said "looks like a good spot" turned on my machine, balanced it put it on the ground and got a hit. Dug the button says Texas on it,. (If anyone has an Id that would be great),

Next in between digging shell casings I moved up near a tree that looked inviting and got a strong signal out pop's that 1853 Largie...Its got some corrosion but it has megga detail, even full liberty.. then as a bonus on my way to the car in the park Got the silver rossi... It was a happy day indeed....

Cool digs...that's an awesome button!

The button is definitely a Texas confederate button. I have a replica uniform with replica buttons on it exactly like the button you have. Have it checked out to verify its authenticity. If it is the real thing they are VERY sought after.

I found one (for sale) from Mississippi. It has a "lined field" just like your Texas button.

Just the fact that it's hard to even find an example of that Texas button could indicate that it is indeed rare.

Very exciting find!

And here I was stoked about the large cent.....

Re: First Large cent of the year. and button to boot

Dude........that button is the $hit! depending on the backmark of course will be the deciding factor on what you have in either a pre or post war button, and If it is the pre war then you have one dad-gum helluva nice button and I would not clean that Confederate button anymore.
I found one in Texas myself.Yours looks like the TX 23b with an rv of 50 meaning yep its a hooter of a button.Congrats dude.

Well they did have the button during the what we call the R.O.T days meaning the Republic of Texas era,but yes it would be a Civil War button, and I cant tell waht the back says.Does it say Waterbury?

yes that is the only part I can read..

ok! dude people will argue over this backmark on this button......Even tho its in the button book as a post war button with that backmark and a rairty value or rv rating of 2 (rv2) its not a money button as everyone would think, but I know for a fact and have seen and even dug this button with the same backmark in a true civil war era township in Texas that went out right after the civil war,and nothing else but confederate buttons and Civil War era buttons none dating after or post war.
So with that and many button experts and diggers back east will argue till they turn blu in the face because they dont find that button with that backmark,so If its not dug in Virginia etc...its not a Confederate button, and then you have those relic hunters that find that button and argue otherwise...
And there you have it,if you go off the book, then its a post war button not worth much, personally I say its Confederate and congrats..
One last thing in my other book on backmarks this backmark is associated with C.W era buttons and they range from the 1860s,mid 1860's-1870's to late 1860's-1870's......there you have it and take it with a grain of salt.Nice button regardless.Gotta go eat now.Daniel
