savannah, ga
I have been researching some old trails in the area, which were in use starting in the early 1800's on until about 1900. The scans are not that great but I did find some interesting things including my oldest coin to date. This area had almost ZERO modern trash, was overgrown and to be honest, there were probably snakes. Anyway, here is the take from the last two days;
1830 large cent- well worn, about an inch deep-no idea how
1898 V nickel, my first but it pales in comparison to the large copper
Half of an aluminium token, with the lords prayer in the reverse......ANY INFO?
---Same site-where everything had been really shallow, out comes this chinese coin from about 6 inches. No idea how. I don't think that it is a charm. So far all I have been able to tell is that the side with the two symbols is the mint mark, and it appears to be bejing. ANY INFO on that would be more than welcomed. I think it is modern (last century) but am not sure and I do not think it is a charm.
Thanks for looking!
Again, any info on the chinese coin or the token would be appreciated! happy hunting!

Great finds, shiningstar!

I'm still looking for my first large cent--hopefully it won't be long now. Good find.

Your chinese coin is from the Chien-Lung period of 1736 to 1796. Another good find!

Great job on the large cent, shiningstar. :o

There's lots of recipes for cleaning it if you want to clean it. PM me if you want Zoot's "secret" recipe. ;)

Thats some nice digs.I am very interested by those Chinese coins . It seems like there are a lot of them being dug.They all look the same to me.LOL Congrats. :)

I'm still researching the chinese coin. Savannah has been a port city for years and I thought that someone may have gotten it as a novelty downtown at some point. But...most of the drawings of the canal from the era show black slaves doing the work with the boats and I doubt that they would have had the money to purchase such novelties. I have found that there were chinese who worked on a canal in augusta in 1875, so they may have been a skilled labor force in such projects, as they were in building the rail roads. It kindles the imagination finding such great things in what is now a peaceful forest.
