What a way to start the year! Woohoo! The base has some grinding too. I haven't typed it yet but I'm thinking greenbriar.

Gator. Do a search on here from a member named treefrog. His points he dug were covered with deposits due to location . Im pretty sure he used muratic acid to clean them. They were in way bad shape and he cleaned them like new. I know people say do not remove patina but in his case it was not an option and he found killer stuff. Maybe check out the search feature with Muratic acid in this section and see what you think. Interesting piece. Not sure if Dalton as you originally thought but looks to be knocking around in that time frame. Nice find and great pictures. It is not rind or cortex is it?
I can't find anything exactly like it.This one is full of inclusions,,,? And beat to death :icon_scratch:

Will do..thanks. No its not cortex. I've looked under magnification and it looks like sandstone. Its placement seems a bit coincidental. I'm thinking it formed on residue. Either way.. I'm removing it. Thanks TN.

Looks right.

I found the one in my pic less than a month ago. I thought it was a fascinating piece, being that it has a fluted hafting area. Of course it's not paleo, in fact, I think my piece is a woodland era blade. What I liked about the whole "woodland flute" was how evident it is and was even then of history repeating. Personally, I do not think your piece has minerals bound to it as has been mentioned. I think that is a sign of human evolution. Rind or an outer portion of the lithic that would not affect the function of the tool, so a corner got cut, and it remained. That is what pics show me. Correct me if wrong. Nice find! I was really hoping you had your paleo buddy!

I have looked at it under a microscope. I know what the rind looks like on agate coral...this is grains of sand I'm seeing..with black staining behind...on the blade.

Same site as this..

Ok! Your word means more than mine here. I'm stuck with pics. So, do you think archaic and will the sand removal affect the overall quality of the artifact? Or, is that why you are up so early? Couldn't sleep thinking about it? Lol!

Haha.. painting a house today. All I know is the only knapped coral from that site to this point has been middle archaic. Cool piece..killer material..... that'll do for now. Mabey this will show the spot a bit better.

Much better pic. Man! That is a unique, to say the less, lithic. Back to work blues! Lol! Me too.

Nice point, I personally wouldn't do anything to it. It's maker liked it too as it is obviously flaked down from its original size to resharpen it. That also makes it hard to type. Those may not be intentional notches but chips from resharpening. Super find and great material. Your site has Paleo to Historic. Soon they will probably build a condo on it!

I was debating.. but am leaving as is. You are absolutely right about the site.. thank you.

Killer find. It's 18 degrees here right now but I'm going to go for a quick hunt on my lunch break.

Thanks.. good luck. 81 sunny

Well.. after a bunch of reading and compairing I'm going with.. resharpened cowhouse slough blade. Still very much Paleo. Everything seems to fit for that type including flake pattern and high grade material.

These were found in Florida in association with Simpson points.

that is nice material and a great way to atart out the collecting year, but not to be a spoiler, it is not a cowhouse slough point nor any type of paleo.... cowhouses are not thick or have a ridge, they are paleo, thin and made of raw material. your coral is raw , if it was cooked it would be china white. You have a tool that someone made to fit the job. I know cowhouses very well. I have dug the site it is named after here in Hillsborough county. They are hard to find also, here are 2 I dug up there...happy hunting

Is this your first paleo, or just no flute at the present?
