Went on my second trip to the beach with two friends who knew what they were doing .In 4 hours we had found one junk ring and the usual pull tabs and clad. I made 4 or 5 scoops on the best sounding target I had all day and called my friend over to help. He made 1 scoop and handed me a pull tab. I started to walk away and he said wait there’s another target. He made another scoop, looked in and asked who's is it? I said I'm not saying, “what have you got?” He reached in the scoop like he was getting something then dumped out the shells and said junk. I said man I would have split it if it was something good. He stuck up his finger with a ring on it and said that's what he wanted to hear.
It was my anniversary, and when I left the house I jokingly told my wife I would try to find her something nice. It fits her perfect so all I had to do was give my friend half the melt value, and everyone was happy. 3 grams 10K with rubies. No big value, but made our day.

Hate getting involved in these things, but, feel like everyone is kind of attacking rfrady here :icon_scratch: I side with him on this. Even if the scooper DID go out of his way to help (which he clearly did), methinks taking half the money on the melt is wrong. He didn't find the target. Rather, he was just called over to perform a kind gesture in the form of helping a new beach hunter out. Kind of like pulling over to help a stranded motorist and then accepting a tip or cash "thank you" in return...defeats the whole purpose of a good deed and HELPING someone out. ESPECIALLY if they are a "friend". Even more so since the poster sounds like he's kinda new at beach hunting.

Being human we all would hate to give up a nice find. However, sometimes doing the right thing supercedes personal gain. Just my two cents.

P.S. - Even if it was offered to the scooper, I still think he should have turned it down

Yeah I'm new to water hunting. I don't think theres a right or a wrong here, people just have different ways of looking at things. I understand rfrady's take on this. No problem, I've enjoyed the discussion.

I hear ya lookindown  And I am not privy to the way your relationship with your friend works, so, I really tried looking at this from both sides. As I stated, being human & competitive, giving up a nice find is a hard thing to do. However, the scooper really didn't find it. Rather, he was called over to help a friend in need out. Being since you're new to the beach game and the ring wasn't worth a whole lot anyways, I would've just said keep it...but, that's just me.

P.S. - Be thankful it wasn't a coin :laughing7: Might've had to play rock, paper, scissors for it :tongue3: :laughing9:

As long as the two friends are fine with the settlement, which it sounds like they are, then there was no foul IMPO.................

Been there, done that and never wound up exchanging monetary value. Sandwich and a soda afterward, good enough. But these guys are pals and it was a great team effort. No harm no foul.

Awesome find, bet the Mrs. LOVES it!

Kinda mindful of Babe Ruth "calling the shot" also with that pre-hunt verbal agreement with the Mrs.!

There is nothing better than seeing gold in the bottom of your sand scoop! Last October I was hunting Ocean City, MD and found two gold wedding bands within 20 yards of each other. I call it my gold double header. But your find of the ruby ring is awesome and did you know that ruby's are more valuable than diamonds!
