gold coin back.jpggold coin front.jpg
Found this yesterday at an area that has been previously detected judging by someone not filling their holes very well.
Anyway I found this gold coin with bezel to be worn on a necklace, it was right off a well-worn path. I was using my AT pro and hit a signal around 72, A few inches down, the signal was pretty clear and not scratchy like a bottle Which would normally read around this number. This is a very trashy area but since there was a lot of shale in the dirt objects were not very deep I figured I would dig anything that had a clean signal over 50 on the pro.

It is a 1993 1/10 ounce .999 gold "coin" This was the first year for this particular series of coins featuring Hawaiian King Kamehameha

I would like to scratch off finding a gold coin from my metal detecting bucket list but I want to know if finding a gold coin that was obviously worn as a necklace still count as finding a gold coin.

Would you consider it still finding a gold coin? What do you all think??

I'll probably never find another one in my life..lol :3barsgold:

Freaking awesome!! Congrats on a slamming find man!! Here I am still looking for my first indian penny and your yanking a beautiful gold coin out of the earth!! Again awesome!! And congrats!! HH

I am going to consider this a coin, I know there is debate on this and I do understand and agree with both sides as strange as that my seem. This forum is great because all of use give our opinions on what we all find. So to everyone, I am thankful because you are all professional and respectful to everyone that posts there finds on this site. Its the reason why this forum is so great!

Your find, your decision. I'm pretty sure though when a gold coin turns up for you, you will move this 'filler' out of the way, mostly because of the doubt. Maybe one day I will get a piece like this to fill my gap.

Keep hunting & posting.

Good thread, great find. I have come to believe that a "banner worthy" find like yours is a matter of opinion on this site. So, just for myself, If I found anything "banner worthy" I wouldn't care. Your find, whatever it is categorized, is something I would think, anyone on this site would do a happy dance over. I know if I found it, I would think it my best find ever. I would think anyone else (except people that already found a gold piece) would feel the same too. What really is important is how you feel about your find not what everyone else thinks. If it pops out of a bezel, it looks and feels like a coin to me.
Congrats on a great find

congrats on finding it. Since you asked my take on it is that it does not count. it is more like a piece of gold jewelry. To find a period gold coin that was in circulation and was lost at its time of use only counts as a 'gold coin' find. To do this is exceedingly difficult and those who have know the reward to find one. I have not been lucky enough to find one but I have found rare and valuable 1850's relics. gold coins were prized and not often lost. people went out of their way not to lose them, hence these coins are often holed or they were secured in money vests and pouches. Also keep in mind if one was lost; gold is easily seen on the ground and they would often quickly be re-found by others.

I once was trying to get access to a small construction site but due to someone trespassing and making a mess, I was denied. I later ran into this trespasser and he bragged to me what he found at the site. He showed me an 1830's 2.5 dollar gold piece. I would have likely found this coin had it not been for him screwing up my permission. He is a notorious trespasser and gives a black eye to our hobby. I did manage to get him blocked from a mutual friend's land should he ever ask. and yes I found relics there. so for me that was as close as I have come to finding a true 'gold coin'.

so in my opinion you found a nice piece of jewelry worth what the scrap gold value is. If it were a 1oz coin I would consider it banner just like a valuable ring can be. but since its value is relatively small, less than $200 in scrap I would not consider this banner. my two cents. but congrats on finding a decent days' worth of wages in gold.

It is gold and it is a coin so no reason why it shouldn't count as finding a gold coin.....Might not make banner but still a gold coin find....

How did I miss this! Banner in my book! Congrats. I would be happy with anything of any shape or use made of gold!

to put things in perspective this is $132 worth of gold based on today's spot value. this thing is round, yes. made of gold, yes. but it was made as a commemorative piece in 1993. It would be the same as if I melted gold down into a disc and made it a 'danimal' coin for use in the land of 'danimal'. it does not make sense that this is a coin. it is a piece of gold jewelry worth $132 in gold and probably a little more with the bezel which looks like silver; though I suppose it could be white gold or platinum even. but it is probably silver.

here is a quote from the Ft Knox website. "In 1933, gold was taken out of circulation. President Roosevelt decreed that no one was allowed to own gold. Exceptions were made for jewelry, dentistry, tools and coin collecting."

so basically anything lost prior to this date is safe to assume it was lost in the right context of being in circulation at the time. and yes, some may have been lost after that but this illustrates the point I am trying to make.

finding a true period gold coin lost in a true period context is exceedingly difficult. finding items which happen to be made of gold and are round and have an image of a panda, kangaroo, ewok, and were lost as a part of jewelry simply should not count. A modern piece of gold can still make banner. I am sure a 1oz modern gold slug worth $1300 would be nominated for banner though not by me.

I am not trying to take away from your approx. $150 find. that is a nice find and again congrats. but we need to collectively educate ourselves as to why this does not count. there was a nice button found today on this forum worth $150 and was really, really, historical and no one has nominated it banner. the automatic 'nominate for banner' just because it happens to be made of gold and is round is not the correct approach to things.

While scouting for 1850's sites, I once found a gold ring that was modern. for me I have zero interest in anything modern. I had it in my junk box for several years. I finally sold it to a jeweler fro scrap gold for around $100 but can't remember the exact amount. Again, I could have hammered it flat, inscribed 'danimal kingdom' and wore it as a necklace and lost it at the beach. totally different context and meaning than had I dropped an 1850's $1 gold piece in 1856. same rough gold value, but totally different meaning. I have never found a gold coin. but I know people who have spent years coming remote valleys, campsites, battle sites, etc. and they have only maybe found 1-3 at most. if at all.

if those same guys hunted for modern stuff, I am sure they would have found many more than that in the jewelry context. A lot of people wear these types of things. to include real Atocha coins in a bezel. real coin. but not in the right context.

even if it was an actual coin from a govt made in modern times, it would till not count in my opinion for the reasons already stated. a 2010 gold $20 coin is not worth $20. it is worth what an ounce of gold is worth. that's why they are made for collectors. totally different context than an 1860's gold $20 piece found by a detectorist. way different.

but you made more today in what you found in gold value than what I made today. congrats. any gold is welcome.... good luck and hopefully you will find more. again, not to take away from your find. I am trying to put in context the point I am trying to make and go against the current of this idea 'anything round and made of gold is a gold coin and automatic banner'. And this is a difficult idea to turn around so may points my seem crass but it is not meant to be. Again, $150 in gold on any day is a good day. congrats! congrats! congrats! congrats! congrats! and I am sure you will find more gold.... you did way better than I did today! good luck!:unhappysmiley::unhappysmiley::unhappysmiley::unhappysmiley::unhappysmiley:

A find can make banner for many different reasons. There are no set banner rules. They can make it because they are a rare find. How many of these have you seen posted on T Net? Ive seen many gold coins posted on here but this is the first time Ive seen a coin like this posted. The banner is a place to show off cool finds, some people take it way to serious.

lookindown, if you want to nominate a $132 piece of gold as banner which is 'cool' then do so. And yes I am serious about the preservation of history and the memory of those who have gone before us. Thank you for contributing.

Any member can nominate any find...... Making the banner involves a lot more than just being nominated..

Great recovery but not banner worthy. I'm not taking anything away from the find we all would of love to dug it. It's modern jewelry and not that special. If your getting excited over this and think it's banner most likely do back flips over wheat cent's and mercury dime's in your local park. Either way super nice find and I hope I could be as lucky. Congratulations !!!

I'm a member and I voted. I even explained why. You seem to know a lot about this topic please explain to us what meets the criteria for banner other than a member's vote. Thanks you.

Maybe...it doesn't have to be old to make banner.

I didn't nominate it for banner...you got me all wrong and didn't hear a word I said.
