I received my BH platinum yesterday and my 5 year old & I hit our yard for about 4 hours before it got dark. Our very first find was a clothes pin and my son was so excited. We continued on and dug up a lot of trash in the back yard while I was getting a feel for the MD. My son was at my side the whole time telling me that "we wont know if we don't dig" and checking the holes we dug with a pinpointer (super important stuff). After I got the swing of things with the detector we ventured out to the front yard and with in 5 mins we scored a penny. I have never heard my son scream so loud with excitement. He had to run inside and tell his mother all about it. Two more hours after that and we found 2 more pennies. It got dark on us so we quit for the night. This morning my son was chomping at the bit to get outside and do some more hunting. We went at it for about 45 mins and found a 53 wheatie about 3 inches down before the rain drove us inside. My son and I are loving this new hobby and can't wait until the "next big hunt".

Happy hunting everyone!!!

Congrats on your first finds and what sounds like a wonderful time with your son! I'm looking forward to my first outings with my son and daughter! Nice bandsaw too :)

Aww that's so cute. I'm sure he is just amazed by it all. My son is 19 and he thinks I'm goofy lol I gotta find me a neighborhood kid to help dig. My knees could use the help lol

Now it's time to go buy the Lincoln penny folder for 1941-1974 and show him how to start filling it.

And then, when you find the pre-1941 wheat (which you will), you start again, with the 1909-1940 folder.

And so on... You will be digging his college fund!

WELCOME TO THE INSANITY!

Glad to have you on board. Keep at it, you will find better items, and more items. Sometimes just more items and not better items. But like you son told you, you won't know if you don't dig. Send me a pm and I will share some wisdom with you. Once in a while too many cooks do spoil the soup. This info is really for your area.

Good luck and hope to hear from you soon.

HI BOB!

A BH Platinum was my second detector. I have bought a White's XLT, AT Pro and now have a Fisher F75 Limited. I found more with the BHP and like it better than any of them. I am going to Modova and plan on it being my number one detector. It's super light, pinpoints perfectly and goes deep.... the only complaint is that sometimes it rings high on steel but it will find the stuff. I am still learning with the F75 and hopefully it will begin to outpreform the BHP. Good luck to you.

When it stops raining bury a quarter and a dime 4 inches and see how it hits. Try turning down the sensitivity to 4 and see what you get. I found my BH Platinum would go deep with the low sensitivity and not return so many bad hits. If you are in an area without much trash just run it up to 9 and it will get the deep targets.

I also remember taking my daughter with me on an early hunt. I dug out a silver coin and she snapped it up. I asummed it was a 50's dime but she run away away with rubbing it to see the date since I said the old stuff is worth more money. She said wow it's got pretty wings on the head. I knew it was a mercury and told her wow that is worth some money. She was so excited!!!! and so was I!!!! Just minutes later I pulled a 50 cent piece and she snapped it up before it hit the ground. It was a 1973 clad but WE found it. My daugther is from Moldova and we are going to see her grandmother for the first time on August 28th in Grigorpopol, Moldova. I sure plan to bring my metal detector and make some more memories. You will find many things in the future.... honestly not many items will have much value BUT you and your son will look at these items and say "I remember when......" and THAT is was makes those simple items pure TREASURE!!!!! Be sure to check the banner finds in early September.... I will be there. If not I will still have hugs and smiles from my daughter :)

Thank you to everyone!! We are getting the first significant rain in 3 years. (The local lake is completely dry for the first time since the creek was dammed, I think in the 60's). We are seriously in need of some moisture. I have cracks in my yard over an inch wide and digging our treasures was horrible at best. Hopefully the ground will soften enough to be able to hunt the local fair grounds next week after our fair finishes this weekend. My son is totally stoked about it. I will plant some coins this weekend and see if I can't fine tune my skills somewhat thru different setting trial and errors as my Platinum is hitting iron with high tones as well with the ferrous metals disc. out. I am overly pleased with the performance of my machine, it recovers faster than I thought a MD could and is exceptionally light, which is a good thing since I have had both my shoulders completely rebuilt and they tire easily. (I don't know how anyone could have swung a lunch box detector.)

Thanks again to everyone- I am not to proud to take advice and will gladly admit when when I'm wrong.

That is so cool, Ace going to Moldavia and making memories with your daughter. There is nothing in the world like seeing the gleam in their eyes of finding treasure with the ones they love.

I am not a smart man but if someone says the BH Platinum is not a quaility machine ask them what all machines they have hunted with. I have used some of the best and still own some of the best.......ok I am going to Moldova so I can take one machine,,,,, my best machine,,,,, I am taking my BH Platinum. Don't waste your money on hype you already bought the best detecor for your $.
