First couple finds from lunchtime yesterday. Super deep whisper of a 27-29 in the woods.

Also found an old aluminum novelty token there and a wheat.

Made it out first light this AM at a dot we have hit 8 times already. Site dates back to late 1700’s. Spent 3 hours digging every little whisper of a 20+ tone, one way, and the crazy flutey 38-39 tones. The new software on the Nox really was working extremely well in the moist soil. Focused on the 10’x20’ area that already produced several LC’s and KGs.

Here are the relics from this spot. (And my 2nd ever CW mini ball!)

Some non metallics popped from this area.

A couple pewter spoon frags.

ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1580604476.050150.jpg

Then got a small 20-22 one way signal with big iron, pulled a 5” rusty J hook out of the hole and the signal cleaned up to a 4 way 31-32. Lots of meat on the bones as they say...

Another nice looking coin popped.

ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1580604649.445874.jpg

Then a really smooth disk popped, thought for sure it was a KG until I got home.

I can make out a 7 at the end and at certain angles it looks 1797, but could be 1807. My first Draped Bust Large Cent!!!

Here’s a group shot of the roundness.

And a “mud butt” after falling and sliding down the ravine trying to climb out of this site, I’ve learned to toss the detector and shovel if I sense the imminent tumble...

Good luck out there!

Wow!! Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Congrats! I found my first draped bust a couple months ago. Another check off the bucket list!

Very nice hunt, My guess for the DBust is 1797. Those clean very well after a swim in vinegar or lemon juice. :icon_thumright:

Nice digs, Thad! I also see a 17 there on the DB....

Thx! What does the vinegar bath result look like with a DB? A wheatie in vinegar turns pink, right?

Brighter in copper color perhaps. It depends on the amount of corrosion on the coin. Less patina, better quality after quicker cleaning. I’ve thought for a while that occurs after it is overdone in the vinegar and salt for longer than 6 minutes. As it cleans oxides very quick and effectively you would need to keep an eye on it frequently.

Congrats on the great finds from the past 2 days. That dot is treacherous to reach but worth it. You pulled a lot for it being your 8th or 9th trip. Are you ever going back again?

Nice job, looks like the soil there likes the copper, except for that DB. The only one I’ve ever found came out smoked but I could ID it. Great job

the mud bath was your Desert after a good meal of finds

Those coppers are pretty pristine for having been buried so long! Those are the digs we dream of when we leave the house!

That is a mighty fine group of coins. I'm very impressed with the condition of that LC and IHP. Congrats on a fantastic day!

Great job! The coins are in really nice condition for the most part. Great group of finds overall.

Nice hunt Thad, that 1820 LC is beautiful. I would have thought you would have a Draped Bust LC by now considering all the older stuff you've found.

Beautiful 1820--some good dirt there :occasion14:

Thx Louis! The small hot spot would be worth digging out, removing top 10” and the swinging it again super slow. All the recent food targets were deeeeep.

Thx Steve! My motivation this year at the really old sites is too look for that hidden silver Bust coin. That’s at the top of my B List.

Man I am jealous! Those are some really cool finds. Love the Barber and Largies.

I have a couple questions if you don't mind sharing. What are you looking for in the woods? Are you usually tracking down old homesites or gathering spots? I would't know what to do when hunting the woods in my area.

Second, do you encounter a lot of undergrowth that hampers your ability to swing the coil? Himalayan blackberry bushes are so rampant here it's hard to find woods spots that aren't too overgrown to hit.

Thanks and good luck in your continued outings!

Thx! There is a ton of history going back 250 years in W PA. There are a number of accurate maps and sites with aerial photos. There is also an accurate LIDAR map site. I usually start with the 1872 map (overlays to present day) and check for home site dots with names that have access roads leading off of old dirt roads that are now in one of our many huge parks. Then I check LIDAR and aerials to see if I get multiple references points. From January through April the woods open up, briars and foliage is down.

Basically I’m always tracking an old site I have researched, never had luck just wandering the woods.
