Technically these were found yesterday.
So I had a few hours between work and sunset to try my new md. Headed to my
friends farm (house was built in the early 1800’s) that I have spent countless hours hitting with my equinox. I’ve have good luck there with my earliest coin found being an 1824
large cent.
I wasn’t sure what to expect as I have only skimmed through the manual and figured I would learn as I go and would hunt by sound instead of using the graph or vdi numbers.
I used the default settings and hunted in all terrain general.
*side note* - the emi at this location is bad and can only use the 15khz freq with the
equinox.
Started out working my way through the yard just to get a feel for what the detector
was doing and what to expect from random chatter and signals. So far so good.
An hour in and I’ve dug nothing but trash, from can slaw to bullets. All of the targets
I dug sounded good but without knowing specific vdi numbers I wasn’t sure what
would come out of the hole. I didn’t have high expectations but I didn’t think I would
leave with a pouch full of trash either.
So into the second hour and I’m trying to keep from getting discouraged with my new
purchase and keep my frustration level at a minimum…, so I move to the side yard.
At this point the sun has set and I’m about to pack up and call this a learning
experience. Then I hear this crisp high tone, 82-83 vdi and right
on the centerline of the graph. I dig down about 4” and pull out the plug. Pull out
some loose dirt and then I see the shiny edge of a silver dime.
At this point it’s almost dark and I’m on a high from not only finding my first coin with the manticore, but It’s also my first coin of the year. So I decide to head to the car, detecting on the way when I get another great signal (77-78 on the vdi, centerline of the graph).
I popped out the plug, used my pinpointer and out comes a coin. Used the flashlight
on the pinpointer and could see that it’s a penny, an old penny.
