Ace 250, My eyes
Hello Everyone

My name is Glenn and I live in Atlanta GA. I'm 25 and been reading about treasure hunting the last week. I started with Indian Artifacts being my interest then and tried but thats pretty tough to find so I thought Metal detecting would be a little more interesting. I read a few reviews on some different metal detectors and within my budget chose the Ace 250... Alot of people say great things about once you tweak it and understand but after ten hours of using it I'm not so sure I'll ever get the hang of it. My adventure started on some beaches lake Allatoona in north GA after being there for an hour I notice the perfect rows of footprints and holes wow someone else had already worked the beach. Ofcoarse I didn't give up I kept on and my ace would beep and beep the Id tag would bounce around 5cent 25cent Iron then back to dime it was interesting but I dug everything as advised. even when I would lock on an object that said 25cent or dime it would be a pop tab and again and again.

I moved further out where I could see the previous explorer hadn't been and there it was lots of quarters dimes and nickels by the way every square foot seemed to beep Iron after digging lots of junk I discriminated Iron... I didn't turn of pop tabs in hopes of some jewelry fallen off a swimmer.
Here is what I found most of all the change came from here oldest being a nickel and quarter 1967 there is a row of 1960's on the bottom left.

Then I called a lady I knew at a forest preserve where a house was built in the mid to late 1800's there had been a railroad along a creek and a major road that had went through the property till 1906 when they moved it... I guess it would have only been traveled by wagons... Anyways wow I couldn't walk anywhere without the iron sound going off and ofcoarse the id would bounce everywhere then go back to iron I dug some interesting Items to large to carry around so I left them till tomorrow. Mostly really rusted items hunks of metal one piece of farming equip I think. Oh yea this was a cotton farm through the 1800's and early 1900s. To wrap this up I turned my preset to coin and still dug up iron the Ace 250 bounces everywhere. I wonder if it's the more expensive detectors that don't or why I only dug the poptabs on the beach when it showed and sounded like 25cents or even silver dollar...

I also found this token that says Alabama state tax commisioner on one side and L - - URY TAX TOKEN on the other it has a one on the right in left side anybody know if this is old or how old????? and is it silver or something??? It cleaned much easier than anything else OHYEA how am I supposed to clean I used water and a steel brush and scrubbed like crazy I don't know remember this is my first diggins

So if you read through this I have questions about why my machine goes all over the place is it the same way with the more expensive machines I couldn't enjoy myself at the property where the house was cause everything I dug up was chunk of junk is that common I must have dug up 30 or 40 junks of stuff??? I did find the token near the river area where the rail road was or in between the road and rail road.... I also need to know if discrimating really works or should I avoid this place due to the amount of junk cause I can't get a solid reading even at the lake it would bouce but only between dimes and quaters for quarters but the same is for pop tops sometimes. PLEASE HELP I NEED ADVICE???

I think you have your senstivy up to high..if your on a salty beach only use 2-3 sens... all other hunts use 4-5 sens I usually use jewlery or all metal modes on my ace 250..the machine is quite easy to use once you under stand it... Took me about 20-30 hrs to start to understand it cause I was a brand new beginner...

Atlantian, let me be the first to welcome you to treasure hunting. I to use the ace 250 and have for about a year and a half. I have found several buttons, civil war artifacts, etc.. just today while detecting a virgin site and there were so many signals my machine sounded just as you described. I wouldn't mind making a trip if you supply the spot to show you some pointers. For now just slow your swing down very slow and pinpoint each noise then re-swing over each target individually and if it rings in above iron dig it. reply to this message or I.M me if you want to get together. In the meantime check out www.scmetldetectingclub.com its a great club I belong to.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 'tecting! I too think you may have to back off on the sensitivity. Also strongly suggest you find a school or "tot lot" to learn more about your machine. Play with the sensitivity/discrimination notches until you feel comfortable with what it's telling you. Go over the same spots with different settings to see how it responds. Also, if I recall, the 250 is very sensitive to minerals in the soil. We had one for a coupla months, used it in about 6 states, & it either worked well or not at all, depending on the soil!

No, you can't expect it to identify targets at the same depths the high $$$ machines do.

As an aside, when working around Allattona, remember that the Corps Of Engineers owns virtually all that waterfront property...PLEASE fill ALL your holes. Note too that you can legally 'tect on the beach & in "previously disturbed areas" only...Campsites, picnic areas, playgrounds, etc.

Best of luck to ya!

MHO...Your results may vary...No warranties expressed or implied.

Hey Nice finds...Nice choice of detector as well. Look don't get discouraged. The Ace 250 is a one of a kind detector. We around my parts call it the "Coin Magnet". If there is a coin in the ground that Ace 250 will find it. I see what you are talking about time and time again. The ace bouncing around not locking on target. Many factors here. Soil or ground conditions play a big part in things. I took my 250 to the beach last summer. I dug a few coins, pulltabs..When hunting the beach area's turn your sensitivity down to around 2 maybe 3 bars depending on the moisture in the sand. Might have to go lower still..Depends. First thing I would do if I were you. Set your detector down outside away from any metal. Maybe a wood table or a wooden chair. Somewhere where you can see the screen. Take you a penny, a nickel, a dime, and a quarter. Put the machine in the all metal mode. Make sure you don't have any jewelry on. Run each of the coins in front of the coil. Listen to the sounds and look at where the screen id's each one at. You will find that the machine is very accurate at id'ing each of the coins. NOW..run you a gold ring and a silver ring in front of the coil. Listen to what those sound like. Remeber the tones. When you are out in the field and hear those types of tones. Dig em up. Most house sites are gonna be trashy. Lots of iron mixed in with the goodies. You have a couple of options. You can put it in Jewelry mode which will notch out most of your iron signals, you can put in custom and manually discrim it out or you can buy you a Sniper coil and work around the trash. It will take you awhile to get used to the swing of things. Also go and watch Crackbadger on youtube.com...Just go to youtube.com and type in Crackbadger or Garrett Ace 250..Crackbadger has a awesome video showing how to use the Ace 250...His gold finds will FLOOR you. If you have anymore questions about the ole ace PM me. I will answer your questions. As far as your Tax Token. I found one last week in my neck of the woods. Mississippi...Here is mine...

Welcome to TNet. I use my Ace 250 on the fresh water beaches here in Tennessee. I even hunt out in the water with it (just don't get the control box wet)... I notch the sensitivity back sometimes when it starts acting crazy. Hunting tot lots was a good idea to start off with. Some people say for beginners to hunt in all metal and dig everything that beeps but I would not recommend it. That just about drove me crazy. I went back to coin mode and it was a lot better. I was getting all kinds of false signals when the sensitivity was at max and getting more frustrated with every hole I dug and found nothing.

Try setting sensitivity at about 4 bars from the far right and hunt in coin mode to start out with. Don't hunt under power lines till you get more experience. (that causes it to go crazy)... Only dig the signals that will repeat when you swing the coil both ways over the target. When you get a feel for it you can start experimenting with the other modes and sensitivity. It really does get easy with a lot of practice. Best of luck to you.

Hay atlantian, You need to take up Dive Wrecks offerings to help you. He is bending over backwards to help you. Sorry, But you have a lot to learn. You need to begin with the laws of Ga. first . Have a good day.

Wow I greatly appreciatte everyones advice I think it's just a matter of time and I think where I was today it is completely filled with trash that I need to take a smaller area and start clearing it out... Its not that easy to work it slow you see an area by the next big tree and you want to go over there cause that might be where the yard was... the house that was there in the 1800's is completely gone so it's hard to tell where to hunt at right now. I recieved a great piece of advise to just work a small area in it so I think that is what I'm going to do is just make sections and clear the junk till I get it clean I guess and somewhere through all that stuff should be some treasures I hope...I'll post more pics tomorrow of the trash items I speak of and maybe I'll have more luck then to... Thanks again oh yea I watch Crackbadger that is amazing I guess you could make a living metal detecting in Asia

The other replies are full of great advice in to your questions. Your Ace 250 will lock in on coins, provided they are at normal depths. You just need to concentrate on one signal at a time.

And on a beach it pays to dig everything to get that gold.

Yes, back the sensitivity down and I just run mine in "coin mode". You will still find gold in coin mode,
I found a mans 18k wedding band it came up as a penny, then I found 2 14k (1 ring, 1 earring) that
came up as a nickel. Here is some pointers that others shared with me and they work!!!

  • When you get a signal, make fast short sweeps over it and if the signal stays put, than it is pretty
much gonna be what ever the tag says it is.

  • If you get a signal, raise your coil up like a foot (12") and sweep it again, if you still get a signal
then its gonna be big like a soda can.

  • Stomp on the target a few times if you are getting a bouncy signal, sometime this works (I don't
know how but it does for me).

I have found a lot of goodies with my ACE I hope this helps.

I'm still learning my 250...I use the white's 5900 most of the time (heavy, but wonderful)...another piece of advice : THROW THAT STEEL BRUSH IN THE TRASH!!!!!...you could kill a beautiful coin

sorry to post on top of myself...(hit enter before i was ready),for valuable info on how to clean your finds, try the "cleaning and preservation" link under 'research techniques' on the main forum page...and Happy Hunting!!!

Well there isn't anything I can add, you got real good advice from all the previous posters so let me say this..

Welcome to Treasure Net!

He is on a fresh water beach. So his sensitivity should be as high as he can get it without detector chatter, right?

Atlantian, welcome. I have no experience with that detector and Im just another newbie in Atlanta. :)
Good luck. :)

If you ever wanna get out and hunt some weekend shoot me a PM.

Someone above mentioned that the beach you are hunting on is Corps of Engineers land. I hunt in Mississippi on a Corps beach, and a permit is MANDATORY. I get checked sometimes as much a three times a day for mine. If this is the case for you, go to the ranger station and ask, the permits are FREE and are good for one year. It beats loosing a machine any day. A side note, my girlfriend has an ACE 250 and her first time out with it on a beach she scored a GOLD ring... Keep at it and turn your sensitivity down a bit. Get rid of the steel brush, I cary a medicine bottle with me half full of water. When I find a coin I drop it in, that way when I get home I just run them under the faucet and use a soft toothbrush on the ones that aren't overly valuable. NEVER rub on them in the field to check the date, I would rather find out at home I had a good one... with no scratches on it. HH Joe

the ace 250 at max sen can tend to run a bit unstable (its very very hyper sen at max ) -- 4 to 5 bars in most cases seems to be best sen setting / with 3 or even 2 sen setting on the dry / wet area of the salt water beaches (due to high mineral content) -- if you are getting a lot of "chatter" and its acting up cut down on the sen level --till she smooths out. --while the ace 250 does not have a ground balance -- cutting back on the sen level a bit will normally do the trick in many cases,

LOL.

I think you were trying to make it sound like this hobby is supposed to be easy. First off you need to take time to learn your detector. Sit down read the manual, build a test garden, throw some common targets under the coil and see what the results are. Also throw some trash under there so you can see what the ACE is reading on those. You need to understand a good target from a bad one and thats what you skipped. Also remember your going to dig trash, especially when you start out, everyone does. I still dig trash all the time but I cant remember how many times ive dug gold in the middle of trash. The first step is target ID, knowing your machine and what may possibly be under your coil. The beach with ACE is very easy, like everyone said turn your sens down in or around water. In the dry sand I turn it up to 5 and near the wet sand I turn it up to 3 and 4 just remebering your looking for a constant repetitive signal. NO BOUNCING CRAP, needs to be like the machine is about to blow up. Once you get that down then I recommend working on the iffy signals. The bottom line is you need to put the hours in swinging the detector, no shortcut really exist. Good luck!
