Despite being 24-26* yesterday afternoon, my son and I did go detecting at a new site he found in December. The ground was not frozen in the woods and the wind was abated by the trees, so it was not too bad detecting.

My son got a couple buttons in the first hour and I had nothing but a couple shotgun casings and finally I got a somewhat good, very deep reading, I called my son over as I started to dig and he agreed it could be a coin, but not certain. Well, I dug and dug and cut some roots and now I was down to the more solid clay level at about 8-10 inches and there somewhat to the side of the hole the Sunray pinpointer finally narrowed down the target. I scooped out one last handful and yes, my first old copper for 2010!

Finally, there it is flipped onto the leaves

The KGIII before and after.

A few minutes later my son followed with his first copper for 2010, a 1827 Large Cent. With both of us having a coin for the day we shortly thereafter called it a day and satisfied that both of us got a coin.

Finds for the short hunt.

This site will most likely produce more relics, but I think we will wait till later in the winter for a return trip. My son got several buttons and 5 coins his first hunt there in December, Spanish Half Real, King George III Halfpenny, 2 Coronet Large Cents and one Indian head penny.

My copper ended up being a KGIII Halfpenny in not too bad of shape after some TLC by me.

VERY unlikely it's 1777. I think that one can be put to rest.

Date photos

Cleaned up the date area a bit, from a distance under mild magnification it looks like a 5 for the last digit, but imagination can make it many numbers LOL

I think the 7 is very unusual in how it has the extra line and was hoping that would be a clue to the Colonial experts for a ID by family, since date and letter punches are key in helping to ID those counterfeits.

Ah, I just came in from snow blowing about 7 inches of it from the driveway and walkways :D

I knew you would find some copper after we spoke in chats that day.
Congrats to you and your son. BBoy and I won't be digging anytime soon thats' for sure.

Congrats, Don, on your first copper for 2010! I see another year of tearing up the SJ soil for its long-forgotten, long-lost coppers! :headbang:

Kirk and I are in a Colonial hibernation from the forums. :laughing9: My new job has been keeping me, at least for this Winter, focused on other aspects of my life. Come Spring, we'll be swinging away in the fields in search of coppers and relics! I can't wait for the day when we decide to seek permission for a new site.

Stay warm over there in NJ. I see you guys may be getting pounded again with snow. :'(

Excellent finds - what a great way to start the year. :icon_thumright:

I always enjoy your post and colonial finds, Don. You definetely find some nice spots to hunt. After watching the weather from a safe distance looks like NJ is in for a Blizzard :o WTG on those fine specimens you and your son found. Glad you got out and found those before all of the snow. HH Ron

Great finds for you and your son. Congrats on getting out together.

Always nice for the first coin find of the year to be an oldie, the next one may not be for quite awhile the way this winter is going. :dontknow:
Don't think I ever been unable to hunt at least a time or two in February in the past, but unless I go to the beach, (about zero chance of me doing that) looks like the woods will be a no-go for a few weeks, unless a big warm-up occurs.
