Despite being 24-26* yesterday afternoon, my son and I did go detecting at a new site he found in December. The ground was not frozen in the woods and the wind was abated by the trees, so it was not too bad detecting.

My son got a couple buttons in the first hour and I had nothing but a couple shotgun casings and finally I got a somewhat good, very deep reading, I called my son over as I started to dig and he agreed it could be a coin, but not certain. Well, I dug and dug and cut some roots and now I was down to the more solid clay level at about 8-10 inches and there somewhat to the side of the hole the Sunray pinpointer finally narrowed down the target. I scooped out one last handful and yes, my first old copper for 2010!

Finally, there it is flipped onto the leaves

The KGIII before and after.

A few minutes later my son followed with his first copper for 2010, a 1827 Large Cent. With both of us having a coin for the day we shortly thereafter called it a day and satisfied that both of us got a coin.

Finds for the short hunt.

This site will most likely produce more relics, but I think we will wait till later in the winter for a return trip. My son got several buttons and 5 coins his first hunt there in December, Spanish Half Real, King George III Halfpenny, 2 Coronet Large Cents and one Indian head penny.

My copper ended up being a KGIII Halfpenny in not too bad of shape after some TLC by me.

The date is TBD, had a few opinions given and they have varied, so it is not known yet. I thought at first 1775, but even under a scope it is hard for me to say, will look again later...
Open for intelligent guess on the date :D

More to come from this site :hello2:

How did you clean the KGIII? Well done and off to a good start for 2010 :icon_sunny:

Very good hunt. A King George (any) is on my top 5 wishlist. Way to go on the January coppers!

Congrats Don. I've found the ground to be digable here in the woods also.....Fields are like concrete though.I hope you can get out again soon.

Great that you could get out for a hunt with your son. And great that you two scored a few early coppers for 2010.

Best Wishes,

Well we snuck the hunt in just in time, today snow, about 4-5 5-6 inches down now and been only 16-18* all day, still snowing now, so no hunting for a few days for sure.

could it be a 1777? Don? I used the trick you taught me to find coin dates on photos an I think it is 1777

After some more careful cleaning, I am sure it is either a 3 or a 5 for the last digit. If I can find a similar listed counterfeit with the date sizes the same then I could say for sure. The 3 and the 5 are always hard to tell apart, but on a worn, corroded one, harder still. Leaning 1773 right now :dontknow:
