Found at a house built in 1840. I dug this up and heard it rattling around. My imagination set in and I thought there must of been a couple quarters inside or maybe even a ring?? I tried to open it but dirt and corrosion said no. Brought it home. Couldn't get to it for a couple days and then finally it was time to open it. I took a dental pick and scored the seam where the 2 pieces close and then ran it under some water for a minute. It popped right open and then I saw what was inside. 2 stamps and 3 wheat pennies. The pennies are badly corroded but one of them is legible with a 1920 date. I think the other 2 are also from the early 20's. The stamps are George Washington 2 cents stamps. They were made 1922 - 1925!!!! So this make up compact was lost some time around then.

Wow, that's just about one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, call me crazy but this deserves banner, my votes in!!

Really interesting find R.V.I have always wanted to find a cache.Guess that might be the only way to dig a stamp:).Nice one man!

Nice cache way to go, you have more patience than me. No way I could wait two days esp. with something rattling around inside:laughing9:

Nice recovery, it's always really neat to get paper that's still intact after 90 yrs.

I dug a metal container up a few years back, it was just a lump of rust and I gave it a whack with the digger and it fell apart. Inside there was 3 or 4 large cents from the teens and 3 or 4 paper strip tickets for the street car. It was one of the strangest finds that I've dug up and it will be displayed with the rusty compact/container one day.

I'm like everyone else.. when we find a closed tin.. "Please let it hold something cool." WTG! You showed us again it IS possible to find a treasure in a treasure. Very cool. Congrats !

dug one of those compacts this summer at the base of an old tree, only filled with broken glass from what was left of the mirror.

Congrats! Cool cache find it made banner!

Awesome Find!!!

Sweet thanks for sharing

Might be the first time stamps were found while metal detecting....wow, amazing!

The cool factor of this find is WAY up there. I would clean the compact and store the contents of the cache in there if possible, IMO that is what makes the find very cool. What amazes me is that the pennies are very corroded and the stamps are perfect. I have found a pocket spill of three or four wheat pennies, they are decent finds, but if they were in a container with other contents (the stamp in your case) that would make it 100 times cooler due to the story connected to the find.

Funny coincidence, I stored the wheat pennies from the coin spill inside a little compact I found metal detecting.

Also, The stamps date from around 1929 so that probably dates the cache.

Yep I found cases like but never ant cache...wtg

What a cool find! Congrats to you!

How is this a cache? I hardly think someone stashed three cents with the intention of retrieving it later. Cool find but I would call it a drop instead.

the stamps are NOT cancelled. they were folded inside the compact and the top stamp became stained with the design of the bottom part.the lower stamp is stained by the one cent pieces.awesome find!!!!!!!

I don't know on that Keith ?

the one Definitely looks like it has a Hand Cancel.

I can see the stain on the other though
and I think part of the Hand cancel there also

naturally would have had the post office name on it rather then
the word Cancelled though
