A friend found this while detecting for the first time. The signal was confusing him so he called me over. But the brass handle was a pretty strong signal amid the iron signals so I told him to dig it. In a cellar hole I recently discovered. Not sure how much it's been hit but the only coin I found so far was one severely deteriorated no-date wheat. (At the same site I found my first flat-button at last weekend. (In a hole with 2-3 pieces of iron.)) I presume it's made to hang kettles and such from in a fireplace but I've searched to try to find out what it was, the dates they were used, and what it was called with no luck.)

It's half of a set of hames - the metal thingies that go over a horse collar used on draft horses. The traces hooked up to it. Nice find!
