This was another good find made this year... At first i didn't know what it was. It came out of the ground in two pieces. Size is about 3.25 x 1.25 inches, about 1/8 inch thick.

This was a steel used to strike flint to create sparks for starting fires. Could date from late 1700's to early 1800's, as it came from near an area known for fur trade activity around that time.

Not trying to dissuade your findings, but could it be possible, it might be a single link from a chain ?
Just a thought.

Froggy,

Neat site you posted. After looking at the site, I agree it is a fire steel. Coolfind and great documentation.

Not many of these posted on here. First one i've ever saw.

Froggy Thanks for the education and verifcation on the flint steel, my mistake, no one can
judge or determine what an object is he knows nothing about, I probably would have foolishly
thrown it away. Good luch in future findings.
Great find, HH

Great find, and even greater research.
I agree w/ StickShift, I would have probably tossed it in the junk finds.
Guess I had better be more carefull.

Nice steel. Ive never found one but would have known it from some friends of mine who are reenactors. If you get the chance to go to one of their rendezvous jump on it. they are a great source of info on what the stuff you are digging really is. Plus they usually are very knowledgeable about any period activity in your area.
