Hi all.I found this at a Colonial site here in Upstate NY.It's 3 1/2 inch's long and brass.My brother thought it may have come off of a helmet ? It does have a small piece of cloth attached just above the ball part. Thanks !

That was another thought I had.There is a hole on both ends were a string could have been threaded through.
