Hello all! I thought I'd try to post some of my finds since I purchased my White's DFX last November. Since I am new to the forum, I thought this would help give you guys an idea of what I've accomplished. The first photo below shows my rings. These were all found between December 07 and March 08. All were found on schoolyards, including old softball fields. I have included what VDI reading each ring gave me. I was using the factory preset coins/jewelry program with sweep speed of 13 and recovery speed of 17. Still used best data on these. Pre-amp gain was pushed to 3 and the AC sens. was set to 69, with DC set at 37 to 39. Here's the pic:
Next is a pic of some of my better coins (excluding my recent find of an 1882 Morgan Dollar, a 1956 D Washington, and another Merc):
Next, I am posting a pic of some of the various relics and bracelets I've uncovered. Top three bracelets are sterling, the bottom one is cheaper metal. To the right of the image, there is an old 4-H pin, some various buttons, and you may notice three round objects. These were found at the site of an old train depot. (I'm also including a closeup of these objects below). These are lead baggage seals which were often used on mail bags being transported on trains. They are all marked with the "SRY" (Southern Railway) stamp, as well as a number on each. The rust on each of these is where the wire loop entered and exited the lead seal disc.
The next photo shows most of the clad found from November 07 to spring of 08.
Next, one of my favorite jewelry finds. I found this Hopalong Cassidy ring on a school playground. This read just like a bottle cap (VDI around 58), but I was digging most anything on this small playground. My friend and I found a total of 5 rings (two silver, three non precious metal), 3 Mercs, 1 Buffalo, several wheats, and misc. small jewelry on this small playground (about 50 yards square).
Finally, just some other photos of miscellaneous finds:
Oh, last but definitely not least..........On a recent trip to Charleston, SC, I had my first opportunity to try beach detecting. The area my wife and I stayed was not as populated as the more populated areas such as Myrtle Beach, etc. We went out on the beach the first evening we arrived. It had just finished sprinkling light rain. I had just gotten my detector turned on, and put my headphones on, and had walked maybe 20 yards when a gentleman came walking up to me. I figured he was just going to ask if I had found anything yet. I removed my headphones, and immediately saw a sense of urgency on his face. In a French accent, the man asked me if I could please help him. He said his wife just lost her earring, and could not find it. I told him I was happy to help. I went over to the area she thought she had lost the earring. She told me it was very small. I told them I couldn't promise anything, but would try. First, I got a decent signal, but unfortunately turned up a bottle cap. With the volume really pumped up on my detector, I crossed a spot where my threshold signal disappeared for a fraction of a second. Repeating this sweep, the signal kept disappearing, but never gave me an audible signal (or even a VDI reading!). I told the lady we could try there. After a few seconds, she jumped up and shouted with joy that I had found it!!! All I could tell about the earring was that it was gold. She hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek! They asked me what they could give me for finding the earring, and I told them I was just happy to have been able to help, and would never ask for anything. Feeling very happy about being able to help, I returned to my detecting. About 2 or 3 minutes later, their son (approximately 7 or 8 years old) slipped up behind me and stuffed something in my hand. I could tell it was paper money. I didn't even look down to see what it was. I yelled over to the couple "No, no....I can't accept this.....please take this with you" and they said "you must!" as they walked away, and thanked me again. With no choice but to keep the money, I yelled out one final thank you to the couple. As they disappeared over the dunes, I looked down to see a 50 dollar bill in my hand! WOW! What an unexpected gift! So, I guess this good deed did go rewarded, yet I would never expect such. It is reward enough just to be able to help someone in need.
Sorry for rambling on so long.........but this is a summary of my detecting since I began with my White's DFX in November. (Last photo is me holding that $50 bill!).
