This isn't for everyone! Another one of my well digs. This one was 25 feet to the bottom with only 4 feet of muck. Probably been cleaned before but they didn't get everything (1891 IH penny). Everything else was more than likely dumped after the last cleaning. Guessing by some of the other stuff I found in it....last cleaning was probably in the late 1940's or early 1950's.

Boy!! Talk about Muck and Myer. Say! Where is Muck? Myer's looking for him.

Nice finds!! HH

Nice finds. An interesting way of THing. Not for me though.

As my name says it ("Strand-Filter" = German for "Beach Sifter") I'll stick to the beach. :D

My Hat is off to you. It would take a strong box full of $20. Gold pieces to get my Butt down inside a Well. Best of Luck & Good Hunting. trk5capt...

very interesting. know a few people who dig privies but no one that digs wells. Will have to think about this as there are hundreds of wells dating back to 1800 around here.

In reading this post my job just keeps poping into my mind (Safety Professional, heavy industrial construction) and I read that others want to try it, hell as do I. I am shocked at the safety precautions that 1320 has already implemented i.e. tripod retrieveal system on site and set up, but in addition to that he his constantly hooked up with full body harness while down there. Now, since I perform "confined space" entries all the time I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE going into a well to have a 4-gas monitor or at least an oxygen monitor, manned at the top and lower down into the well to check for proper breathing air, 19.5% O2 to 21.5% O2. I may be over doing it but there are so many fatalities in agriculture and construction dealing with confined spaces exactly like a well.

So just wanted to post, if any questions/comments send um, i will try to answer questions.

In the early 90s I worked for Ambulance/Rescue. Once we pulled two bodies out of a well. It was a horrible site. Just be careful, guys.

1320 - Does that coin have a faint outline of an Indian head, or did I stare too long at the other coin?

Just following up with some responses:

lionhrt9 has an excellent point. Most well deaths are "bad air/no air" related. Not too long ago, two lives were lost in a well cleaning accident.....bad air first, then the well refilled, cause of death: drowning. Bad thing is, the second death was his partner going in after him who suffered the same bad air/no air as the first. IT IS A LEGITIMATE CONCERN!
I use a combination of tools to combat this problem but didn't want to make this a "how to" article under the "Today's Finds" . Anyone that is interested in the "how to" of well digging should really research the safety side of it first. I am willing to share all of my methods to anyone interested. There isn't anything in these wells worth injury or death. But, a thoughtful, carefully planned and safe approach to tackling wells can be rewarding.

Jbot, when I look at the picture that I posted of the mystery coin, I can definately see an image of some sort. But when holding the coin in my hand under different light sources, I can't make out anything. Must be an illusion. It is significantly smaller and lighter than the IH. Not sure if I can even clean this one......
