2 Saturdays ago I located an old foundation site that dates back to at least the mid-1800's, I spent most of the day hunting the front yard and in/around the foundation itself and managed to pull 3 fried wheats, a few buttons and an 1892 Indian head out of the insane amount of iron I was battling against..Far more than I've encountered yet. As the sun began to set the AT Pro presented me with a loud and sweet tone accompanied by a solid 84 at 2 inches. As I popped the plug a large copper coin flopped out..I knew I had found my first Large Cent:hello2: My excitement was fairly short lived though as I got it home and discovered that it was completely toast with almost zero detail to be seen:BangHead: After hours in peroxide I was at least able to distinguish that it was of the Draped Bust variety..

I've been crazy busy with work but managed to steal some time last Saturday and headed there first thing in the morning. I decided this time to focus my efforts on the side and back yard areas and within an hour I was digging my second LC :headbang: I could even make out a date of 1833 on this one. A few buttons, relics and bits of trash later out pops my 3rd LC..another 1833 I couldn't believe it. About a foot away I get a solid 85 at 6-8 inches..it's a beautiful 1902 Barber quarter! My first Barber anything and it's in great shape:thumbsup: I worked my way over to the old well in the back yard and the AT Pro came alive with great signals..by the time I was done searching the area immediately around the well I had found my first Barber dime (1899) my first "demi Franc" or 1/2 Franc (1806-1814?) and my first key date Indian head (1873 closed 3) I finished of the day there with my fourth LC (3rd of the day) and the worst one I've ever seen..It looks like someone beat it with a hammer and also appears to have something stamped into it? Anyone seen this done before?

Thanks for looking as always folks and HH:icon_thumleft:

And these two items I am curious about, the first is a heavy iron ball about 3" in diameter, it's in the electrolysis tank now. could this be a cannon ball? How might I be able to tell?
The second item is about 9 1/4" tall by 4 1/2" wide at it's limits, at first I thought it was a stirrup but now I have no clue...any ideas?

thanks again.

Your "stirrup" what'sit "could be" what held the front wheel of a horse drawn cultivator. Although not exactly like the one pictured, but the 3 "notches" on the one end is like I have seen in person before, sort of for steering, a little bit. And hey it's just a logical guess, and I could be way off.

Hey , I may have jumped the gun on that spoon being solid silver (coin or sterling ) the hallmarks leave me less certain - not trying to be a
buzz kill here - but on the solid stuff I'm really looking for the words "coin " or "coin silver " or "sterling" or the equivalent European marks ,
It may well be good - just don't have enough info - yet .

You have a great spot there! Way to go on all the awesome finds and Congrats on all the first! Keep it up :icon_thumleft:

I admit I don't know either from the marks, (I can't actually read it) but it has the "good look" almost always a plated one will have the plating worn off at least in some places, this one has nice deep "toning" even on the bowl. It surely look real to me, and I'd be the first one to be skeptical. Certainly could be wrong, but my bet is real. To be sure if you don't see "coin silver", "sterling" or a little lion, you could always scrap with a knife on one edge to see if you can find copper.

Nice collection of coins! Must be a great place! Many more coins to come I'm sure.

That looks like a lot of fun digging. One thing that intrigues me that I haven't seen mentioned above is the button with the guy and the horn. It lloks like there is some lettering on it too. Would like to see a close up of that one.

Glad you mentioned that Steve as I meant to inquire about that one and a couple others. It says "Fire" at the top but that's all I can make out.

Maybe off of an old firefighter's coat?

HH,
Chris
