Yesterday I found a couple of buttons (Hamilton Carhartt and Levi Strauss) and a small comb (E Atkins Saws, Finest On Earth) at a site I've been to 4 times now. The cabin site dates from the 1850's - 1930's. They ground sluiced for gold in the area.

Some other things that I found at the site...

old ad for the buckle

Shirley President buckle

old pocket knife

tool I've never seen before.

flag grommet patent Aug 26, 1884

sad iron, parts of Hawley Norton small animal trap, bone handled fork, part of clay pipe with McDougall, Glasgow on opposite sides.

I've dug about 150 shell casings. Some headstamps of note (I think): No 10 US Conical Climax, WRA Co 5 06, UMC S & WR, UMC Co No 10 New Club, and two dual pin rimfire casings with no headstamps.

Love that picture caprock. Thanks. Cool to know what it was used for.

iMAUDIGGER: When I first dug that comb I just figured it was a children's toy. Definitely a fun thing to pull out of the ground.

There are a couple of things I didn't list in this post that I found at the same site. I'm going to post them at some point on 'What is it?'. Maybe someone knows what they are?

It says ALWAYS MEASURE, then there was a third word which I couldn't read so I tried cleaning it and totally destroyed it. Rookie mistake.

I can't find any information on what this might have been. It is broken on both ends. On the right side of the top photo and the left side of the bottom the metal is curled back as if from an explosion. It says: T H GARDINER CAST STEEL and then the number 2. Above are the initials H.J. I'm not sure if the initials were cast when the item was made or added later by the owner. Anyways, I hope someone knows what it was.

The first thing looks like it could be a box corner. “Always measure first” could be a note to the assembly worker.
The second...not sure.

Thanks IMAUDIGGER. That sounds plausible to me. Wish I wouldn't have destroyed it!
