With the weather being so nice (in the 60's) yesterday, Johnny Cache Hunter and I decided to hunt the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Our journey started around 8:00am and went until 10:00pm, this was most definitly our longest hunt ever.

We decided to cross the state along historic route 2 starting in Boston and going all the way to the New York Border. Along the way we stopped at rest areas, old schools, parks, along rivers, ponds and lakes and just about any other clearing we came across.

Johhny is better a descibing hunts than I , so I will leave the rest of this writing to him in his post to come and i will just show some pictures.

Here are my finds.

Nice finds. Was that Buffalo nickel in something when you dug it? I've never seen a nickel come out shiny unless it's a wartime nickel. Long day for sure.

It is my first Buffalo Nickel and it was down about 4 inches, but came out nice and clean.

I have a hard time believing that that Buffalo Nickel was dug from the ground like that. There is just no way....

It was, surprised me too.

For what it's worth, and I suspect it won't be worth much as people will believe what they want to believe, I was standing beside him when ddos dug that nickel. What ddos didn't mention was that I had actually got the signal on the coin but couldn't seem to pinpoint it. I had actually dug a hole about two or maybe three inches from where he pulled out the nickel. I knew there was something in that area but my detector just wouldn't lock on to it. I called ddos over to where I was and asked him to try looking with his detector as he was using a different model than me and thought maybe it might help make difference. He scanned the general spot where I was looking and said that he was getting a hit just a little off from where I had dug. I was confident that the spot I had already looked was really where the hit was emanating from and so I said "well you can dig it" as I was tired and honestly figured he was wrong. He dug it and pulled it up in front of my eyes. I'll ask you to take a look at the picture I'm posting. It's a picture that shows a couple of the buffalo nickels I have dug in the past (not this trip). The one on the left came out of the ground and looks every bit as good as ddos's nickel (barring the date is missing on my nickel), the nickel on the right is what most of the other buffalo nickels I've dug look like. So what I guess I'm saying is, it can happen. I think what you guys are also not taking into consideration is the fact that he's washed and dried the nickel and taken a real nice close up picture of the nickel that actually flatters the coin a little bit, where as my scanner images I think take away a little from my coins.

In any case ddos, I'm happy for you in finding your first buffalo.

Congratulations on your first Buffalo Nickel. :)

As to the plausibility of digging it. Absolutely. No problem here. Danimal found some Buffalo Nickels that he polished with Blue Magic. I would have had a hard time believing he had dug them had I not been there with him.

Enjoy.

Sounds like a great day DDos.Ive dug maybe a dozen Buffalos and two of them came out of the ground looking....silver! Most of the TNetters are supportive and will be looking forward to your future finds. Thanks for sharing.....joe

Nice finds, all of them. That nickel must have been in some really good soil. It's funny, some coins come out looking like crap and others look like they have just been dropped. Good Top soil will do that to a coin. Maybe the coin was in an area where it didn't get much rain on it and the top soil had never been disturbed. It happens, I've found IH's that looked almost that good. I for one would love to find a Buffalo like that one!

Sounds like a great day. Not just with the detecting, but getting out with a buddy and seeing the sites. I believe the nickel was dug on the trip. Too many variables in MDing to say it could only look a certain way. In fact, there are so many variables possible that I'd say to any of the doubters that maybe you don't have enough experience yet to understand the differences in condition that can be possible when digging in dirt. Unless you've got some proof otherwise, give the benefit of the doubt to the person posting...he/she was there, not YOU.

NICE FINDS THERE, NICE HUNTING TRIP. I WISH I COULD GO A TRIP LIKE THAT.

Nice long hunt and congrats on the finds! HH, Mike
