finding silver/question

bergie
well to be honest I'm not really sure but I will say this even today from time to time while getting change i have gotten some silver coins. but also keep in mind it was in 65 that the gov replaced silver coins with clad but i don't think I would pass up an opportunity because i didn't want any clad some of that clad might go good in the old gas tank seeing as how the price keeps going up

Also, don't forget that in the 1980 silver peaked at almost $40.00 per ounce. People that never collected coins began hoarding their silver and selling it to metals dealers for the silver value...might explain why some places that should have had silver don't...it never got there :-)

As I recall (maybe I am dating myself?) silver disappeared pretty fast after the switch. Even nowadays I find freshly dropped silver on my hunts, and once in a rare while (once a year?) it will show up in my pocket change. But overall the silver coinage went out of circulation the same year they went to clad. I remember my mother saving her silver quarters every time she got one, and was frustrated whenever she didn't have a new one when she needed to spend change.

As best as i can recall i have never gotten any silver in with my change. Maybe when i was younger and nieve, but never when i was older and wiser. So, speaking on personal experience i think the silver was hoarded after production was ceased.

I don't recall ever finding any older silver as change, but I guess I have never been that consistent at looking either. Have gotten a few older nickels that had silver in them, but I don't think a lot of people think of a nickel as a silver coin.

I got a silver quarter in change just last week, a 1960 that was badly stained, looked like it had been buried. Probably some kid got into his dad's finds.(my first post)

My teenage cousin spent her silver liberty half dollar that she found in a treasure hunt I had provided, seems that she just had to have that cute hat at the mall and only needed 50 cents more. Must've been a young cashier cause she questioned her if it was real money or not.
I if you have a job where you handle money you get lots of opportunity to find the old stuff. A few months ago I got a couple $1 silver certificates. I thought they were a pretty nice find.

I used to be a CSR (teller) at a bank, and obviously handled lots of money. I looked for coins all the time. Usually just found wheaties--but I actually did run across silver Kennedy's from time to time. The '64s really aren't too uncommon. If you go to your bank and consistently ask for rolls of halves, you will run into some nice stuff. You have to keep on it, though, because most banks don't get a lot of rolls of halves in.

I think my best find as a teller at the bank, was an entire roll of wartime nickels. I got a roll of nickels out to dump in my drawer, and I started realizing that they were older than usual. Come to find out, I had an entire roll of nickels from the early forties. I was pretty excited. I quickly stuck two bucks in my drawer and rolled the nickels back up to take home.

Rolls of coins are always a good way to look for old coins. It takes patience, and a lot of searching--but it is possible to find old stuff in rolls. My usual finds are silver Rosie's in $5 dime rolls, and wheaties in penny rolls.

I have a similar story MistaCotta! I too was a bank teller for 6 years and came across the occasional silver coin. Mostly in fast food business deposits. Still get excited when I would find one!
My best story is when an older woman and her son came to my window toting a pillow case and a shoe box. She told me that her husband collected them and that he had passed away and she needed the cash. We were the only bank in the area with a coin rolling\sorting machine. Normally, we only reserved that courtesy for account holders, but I felt that she needed the help. I asked her to show me what she had and I almost choked when she opened the shoe box! Lots of silver halves and dollars. The pillow case had alot too. A total of 237.00 worth. I cashed them out for her....gladly. I should have told her to take them to a coin dealer....but I don't think she was able to do that. I quickly rolled those bad boys up and bought them out a little at a time. Unfortunately, I had to sell them again when I got divorced. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't miss the ex...but I really wish I had those silver coins back!!

Anyway.......I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to hunt this new area. If anything else...It would be a cool adventure and a great day to be alive.....silver or not!

Keep us posted on your finds and have a great time!

HH, Moon

Okay Lab Rat.....I've gotta know.....are ya dating yourself or not? I'm sure that a guy as intelligent as you would already be taken and if not have women calling all the time. LOL, just kidding, I couldn't resist commenting on yours.
I always look forward to your advice. Dan

I detected a park from the late sixties/early seventies and found over a hundred clads and one silver dime in very little time. I recommend you go for it.

Here is a link to a pic and an earlier post about the stuff I have found in the last 8 monts at the liquor store cash register.

Add to that a few more silver dimes, and about 20 more wheats.? Also I was given a silver quarter and a beat up buffalo nickel, but those don't count as I didn't find them myself.?

My personal fav was the whole roll of silver kennedy halves that someone paid for a pint of vodka with...

Amazingly, I still haven't gotten a silver nickel. At other jobs I used to get them more often than silver dimes, and I still!! Have never found a silver quarter!!! My co worker has found 5 since he has been there...go figure.

MDnoob are you from Hawaii? I see where the story said ABC store. I am from Hawaii too. I had a gift shop in Waikiki from 1965 thru 1989 and really received a lot of silver.

Nope, I'm from Virginia, one of the "control states" where the sale of alcohol is monopolized by the state.

I was a paperboy in 65 and can tell you that silver started drying up before the sandwhich coins even came out. I still got silver but mostly it was worn stuff not collectable. Cladius.
