Has anyone ever found while detecting one of those large, old-time dollar coins, like the Peace dollar, Morgan dollar, or older? Seems like that would be an awesome find, seeing such a huge coin in the ground or the scoop.
The monkey on the back, white whale, my nemesis.
Been wanting to find one since pre-puberty.
I'll never find one probably.
Nope!
Closest I have been, thought I was finally going to shake the critter off my back was this medal. Very close to the size of one, but no cigar. But seeing it in the dirt will always be a great memory.

Great chance for me to pat myself on the back again…

Thankfully, I am old enough to remember getting big dollar coins in normal cash transactions.
Regrettable, I sold my big dollar coins when silver hit $45. I've never found one in dirt or sand.

I've only ever found one Silver Dollar - a 1880 Morgan that had severe fire damage.
All that's visible is the date and for or five stars.

I've always thought that in colder areas many larger Silver coins like Half's & Dollars could have been dropped in the snow.
Their just to big and shiny to not see or hear them when they land on clean ground.

Found 3 Morgan dollars, but, no Peace dollars yet.

I found a 1921 Peace dollar, here's the story...

In 1998, while visiting my in-laws in PA, a neighbor walks over and sees my metal detector and asks if it could find a silver dollar? I said yes and he says in 1960, his two sons were fighting and the younger one came running out of the house and threw his brother's silver dollar across the road.

I grabbed my Garrett GTA1000 and after a few minutes, it showed a dollar at 6 inches deep. I opened up a plug and there it was. His son got it back.

Nope I haven't found a silver dollar, but I have found several silver half dollars. That's a pretty big thrill in itself!

It took me 16 years to find my first one. Now I have 6. Two Morgan -four peace. Found three of my peace dollars same place all about three feet apart.

Yes I found a Walker at an old House. It was buried on top of a metal box which I was not able to dig up. I just heard that Silver Warble on my ETRAC.
If I found a silver dollar on top of a buried metal box, there's no way you could keep me from digging up that box.

2 VERY NICE FINDS Can you share any details on the finding of them Just curious I have only found one coin A large cent And when I first dug it I did not even know what it was In your position it was pretty easy to know what you had on the spot Vey nice coins to dig
Thanks, it's easy to identify these since they screamed "Dig Me". The Peace dollar was dug in Dec 2015 on church property, behind were a house once stood. It was about 8 inches down and under a pine tree root. It had fire damage, probably the coin was in some old clothing thrown out on a burn pile back in the day. The Morgan was dug on an old Football field. It was likely lost by a referee and probably was used for the coin toss. The field was used from 1965 until about 2012. It was only only about 4 inches down and dug on Christmas eve day in 2016. I also dug an Ike at this football field but did not post it here since it is clad and not silver. Below is a pick of the Peace dollar before cleaned.

I also once dug this Spanish Piece of 8 from the low tide, maybe a year or two ago. I think it is a contemporary forgery, but it may just be degraded from 200 years of salt water exposure. Looks to be Carlos IV from the early 1800's.

In this picture you can see the "NG" indicating it's from the Guatemalan Mint:
