Guys,

As fellow detectorists, I would appreciate any comments or thoughts regarding my cleaning and preservation post I made in the other forum. I have only had 1 response and would love to collect thoughts on my research or other suggestions from you guys. If you don't mind providing comment, you can find my post here:

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Well you had a lot of questions.
I've looked around and tried to find things that will work for cleaning metals that I've found detecting. If you find answers please share because I would like to know as much as I can to preserve or clean my finds. I have no perfect answer to your questions but I can tell you what I've done.

Clad coins I spin in a rock tumbler. Pennies separate from silvers. (The copper stains the silver)
I found a bunch of old silver coins on the beach (saltwater). They came out of the sand with a dark purple look to them. I used a silver dip my wife bought from cvs it's for jewelry but I figured id try it on some of these coins. Bad idea. I didn't hurt the coins and seemed to help clean them but I didn't wear gloves and I rubbed the tarnish off with my fingers and it stained my fingers dark brown for almost a week. No matter what I tried I couldn't get the stain off of my skin. Not a good look for me at work as a chef.
Electrolysis works well but I haven't tried it on coins yet. I have build a little one out of an old phone charger. I will try it on some of this silver coins soon just to see what happens. The coins I have are pretty shot though from the salt. I did however use an electrolysis bath on an old cast iron skillet. I hooked it up to a battery charger with a wash soda mixture and it came out looking brand new. I couldn't believe how well and easy it was.

Hope you get some more answers to your questions.

try ketchup iv e it with really tarnished pennies and they come out looking brand new no scratching or scuffing involved
