had not had time to do much hunting of late. But today I had to do some traveling to do a lecture on gold refining.

I stopped by a bank I had not been too for about 6 months. This bank in the past had produced solid rolls of 40s for me, so I figured maybe some more were deposited.

well, I was right. Out of $260 in hand rolls
1 all 1996Ds Unopened,
a few fed rolls from the mid 90's unopened, One produced a 64 ken!
And some scattered 40s but the big surprise was
First roll I pulled, Solid silver 40s and a couple 90s

The batch produced 5 Full rolls of Silver plus some extras in the lot.

I hit a couple other banks but didnt get much to brag about, more of the same junk.

But the days totals were

112 40s
7 64s
1 ben
1 proof 2007S
an 87D

Not a bad day at all! thats over $300 in silver, that paid for my gas for my trip and I'll have cash left over!
Not to mention I was paid in gold for doing the talk I did. cant beat a gold nugget for sharing what I like to talk about anyway!
Today was a good day!

JewelerDave,

I am curious, how do they remove the non-gold and non-silver components when they melt/refine 14KT gold and 90%/40% silver so that they can make .999 gold or silver? I know all the stuff gets melted, but I wonder how they filter out or remove the non-precious metals.

Jim

Good haul. From some recent posts, must be picking up. I am sure the slow down in the economy and the gas prices will influence some to let go of the hoarded silver. Good for us coin roll hunters.

I don't know where the post is off hand, but if you search for posts by jeweler dave, he posted one time how to refine gold. Really simple, but does require a bit of attention to detail and personal safety.

Thanks, I do hope this is a change in events. but it is just one small cache I found.

Its a misunderstanding that melting metals will make them pure.
Its a chemical acid separation that does the trick, Simple in practice and Theory but does require special tools and handling. Anyone wishing to do the research on how its done can find it with ease. Its fascinating.

Fortunately gas was not too expensive for the trip. I did over 300 miles on just under 6 gallons. 52mpg average. $21 for my trip. Managed to score some gas at $3.45. plenty left over after I sell the silver. I just wish I had a bigger tank, a 10 gallon tank is not enough as gas shot up to $3.75 in a day.

I also think that a lot of the silver going into Circ is not as much out of desperation but of an aging generation.
Most of the folks who would have culled this stuff out back in the 60s are now in there 70s and 80's and more.

What is going to happen when they die? get moved into rest homes or when there family has them euthanized.
The cleaning begins and those old jars of coins and rolls get taken too the bank.
I believe senility also plays a part. If you think your still living in the 50s or 60s depositing silver coins is normal...hey whats that new fangled thing over there?

Also, at least wtih 40's a few years back they were not worth much more than face....for people who still think they are not worth more than face or that coin dealers wont take them...its too the bank.

Coin dealers are also a culprit. The one where I am at locally is only willing to pay 70 cents each for them...its no wonder there are so many deposited here and there.

Very nice haul JD!!! Kudos.

I am starting to see some post with some very nice results lately (some boxes and some hand rolled). Things are starting to look up it seems........lets hope this trend continues.
