After weeks of living vicariously through other people's posts of their great finds, I said enough is enough. Between starting a new job bartending, complete with day and night shifts, I have had little time to detect. A place nearby where I live recently was given the okay to detect. We had been there before the trespassing signs had been posted, but save for a Seated Half, nothing substantial was ever dug there. Way too much trash, ground hard as stone, the usual excuses to find somewhere easier to dig. They are now starting to prepare the land for condos, and have been starting to dig up the area. Hit the area early Saturday morning, and after about five minutes, dug a 1905 V-Nickel. Nothing amazing, but always a good sign. Next appeared a 1900 Cheyenne Frontier Day souvenir badge, in great shape. The constant lighting of my votive candles was starting to pay off. Then a 1899 Indian, followed by one of the ugliest cameo broaches that I've ever dug. (Bright red, made out of plastic, or celluloid) Then the usual junk, scrap brass, buttons, etc. Then I dug my very first railroad baggage claim, a Union & Central Pacific Railroad's. It has a "Thomas Patent Feb 19th, 1867" imprint on the top of the tag. That got me going. Soon after, i dug a slightly larger claim tag, with "Western Transfer Co. Claim" on it. I have found no info on this piece so far, so any help would be appreciated. Lastly, I dug a 1854 bank of Canada half cent token, which common back East, is an unusual find fo Denver. No silver, no gold, NO TOKENS, but it's been awhile since I've dug anything decent, so I'm very happy. Will be out there tomorrow, hopefully I'll have more to show.

Banner? Sweeeeeeeet! I got home at 3:00 am, after dealing with crazed, drunken college Hockey and Lacrosse kids and since been staring and typing, staring and typing for the past seven hours. (I type real slow). Was about to call it quits and pass out when I came back to the site and saw the Banner. Thank you all for the input and info on those claims. Still haven't found anything concrete on the Western Transfer Claim, might have to drive to Golden, CO, to find anything out. They apparently have a real nice train museum there. Or something to that effect. Thanks again PBK When I learn, you'll learn.

They do have a train museum there, or did in 1999 when I visited it. Those are some very cool finds, by the way. I'm partial to coins, but those items are every bit as interesting.

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Great finds even though the broach is not as nice looking as the others it may worth some buck's. I would check to see if it is maybe coral or Bakelite. Congratulations on the banner cant wait to see what else you find there.

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Congratulations on the BANNER! Great finds!

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Beautiful finds, the Cheyenne Frontier Day souvenir badge is awesome. You had a great day out there. I wish you the best for the next hunt!

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

That Cheyenne Frontier Day souvenir badge is radical and what great condition!!

So glad you could rescue those wonderful items before they were covered up forever. Go get some more!

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Thanks again for the responses. The detecting club that I belong to has their next meeting on Sept. 12th, which happens to be the month and day on the Cheyenne badge. Thought that was kinda cool. When I enter it in the Finds of the Month, I'm sure that I'll be mentioning that.

Very Nice Finds!! That 1854 Upper Canada bank token is a very unusual find for the West! That is so early it makes you wonder how and when it got there, very cool find

The coin with "D.M. 59"....whats the other side of it look like? Just curious.

Congrats

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Just the #7. Some type of claim check? Hoping it was a token, someone else dug one of those. Nice one too.

The Union and Central Pacific Railroads baggage claim check / tag is quite scarce and extremely collectable.

The other tag and Cheyenne badge are also very desirable Western exonumia items.

Although I would prefer not to post any estimated values, I'm confident in saying that the combined worth of these items would easily amount to four figures.

Wow!! I thought they we're junk tags worth maybe 5.00,see how much I know...huh? haha Thank you for answering my question...

Re: FINALLY, SOMETHING WORTHY TO POST

Again, thanks for all the responses to these finds. I'm with all the people that had no clue to the value, historic or monetary, of these items, until I posted them here. Would have just thought that they were just another bunch of cool relics. Plan to bring it to a woman that runs an railroad auction house sometime this week, I'll let everyone know how it turns out. We went back to the site early this week, in hopes of finding anything, a corroded Indian head cent was all we got. Again, like I've said before, thanks for everything!

LOL! I've been hanging around here (under various accounts and user names) for years and I still haven't found anything banner worthy. :tongue3:

You did extremely well!
