It rained quite a bit in Southeast Missouri on Friday. I slept in this morning (Saturday) and by the time I got up, it was beautiful out. The high was 70 degrees and the ground was nicely saturated. I grabbed my gear and headed out to a location that was a known civil war imcampment. The only problem is it's too well known for this. It has been absolutely hammered over the last few years. The homeowner said many years ago her kids picked up 3 ringers off the surface of the yard and she knew belt plates and other noteable finds had been taken out of there.

I hunted this place about a year ago with Mastereagle, and only found rusty nails here and there . I set out today with the notion that I would find a bullet. I changed some settings on my machine and was kinda fighting with it. After about 30 minutes I was getting more comfortable with these new settings. After digging about 7 or 8 marginal signals, I had an iffy signal that was jumping from 85 to 39 and back to 00 randomly. I dug the hole and about 4 inches down I located a rusty nail. I persisted in the hole and recovered another rusty nail. I checked the hole and kept getting wierd signals. I stuck with the idea that these nails were not responsible for the high tone. My persistance paid off when I saw the point of what appeared to be a bullet. I said over and over....Oh my god, Oh my god and when I saw the rings, I was elated. I wish I had found something more, but one good keeper made my day. Thanks for reading!

BTW: I found a ring pull tab at 7 inches, so there are bound to be more viable signals in that yard!

This was totally encapsulated in a clod, so I guess someone had started carving on this. See the cut line?

The base is concave, but unfortunately, no marks inside.

Does anyone know anything about this kind of bullet? I appreciate any information.

Thanks, Baldingboy

I'm not in an area for civil war bullets but that is a beaut in my book.. I kinda wish I was in a civil war area, but, maybe I can dig one from the revolutionary war... hey its a possibility..and congrats to ya on your great find..

From the pics it looks like a dropped .58 cal minie ball. Always a nice find.

Nice find...Not sure the call but it does look like it could be the .58

Hmmmmmmm

Don't remember getting an invite to this hunt.... ::)

No really, just kidding. He invited me I couldn't go.

That is a cool bullet!

They don't always come out with white patina. Depends on the ground it is in. Seems like every time I find a nice bullet its got little or no patina on it. lol Thats a .58 cal miniball for sure. I can post a few Missouri non patina bullets if you want.

Alan

Here ya go. I even added a drop .58 for comparison. The other two are a .69 Muscatoon and a .54 Merrils.

Man, its been a while since i've seen you and the eagle button master. Congrats on pulling something out of that old beat up place. My last 5-6 trips there have produced nothing but nails, even after digging the iffy signals

Nice to find what you're looking for. No doubt you will find more. There's always more.

Good luck,
HH.

Nice round dude anything having to do with the CW is first rate.

BB, thats allot of nails. That place may have been punded but if you get ME to clear the nails I bet you will come up with more good stuff.

some cool stuff.

Dude, I recovered this bullet on the left side of the house between the fence and house when you are facing iect. I dug the two nails and almost didn't find the bullet. It really wacked my detector out. It was fortunate that I decided to believe my detector even after the two nails.
The signal was "iffy" from it's inception.

Let's get together and hunt sometime bro............

Tom

I'd say probably half of my finds at that field were iffy signals that had a nail or some piece of junk iron in it. I lost my cell phone about a month ago and lost you and Larry's numbers. I was out digging some massive dirt piles across from the River CAmpus yesterday and would have called you 2 if i had your numbers
