Went out early along the highway, small strip of public woods not far from my house. SO much trash, very popular party spot. But I was getting decent deep signals mixed in and found a dandy button and two excellent buckles. Then I dug a way deep KG along what might have been an old swamp area, hard to tell what was there that long ago.

Deep in the tick-infested brush I came across a nice large cent, not a very legible date, but always happy to see Liberty facing right. About a foot away another large, and this time the 17 jumped right out at me. I have a couple almost positive Liberty Caps in my collection but never any numerals. Definitely going back to work the trash, this had to be some kind of path or happy hunting grounds in the day.

nice. congrats! yuck on the ticks

WOW! And in a spot no one would probably try to hunt because of the trash! Congrats on the amazing finds!

Congrats on breaking into the 1700s Steve! You are a long time contributor to this site and are well deserving. With a little cleaning you might be able to pin down an ID of that coin, good luck! After a little sleuthing, I was able to fully ID my only Liberty Cap (1796, S-88), and my coin was in much worse shape than yours. I didn't even have a visible date to work with.

Amazing finds fellow Mass hunter- Congrats!!

Very Nice!!! Sweet Coin!!! Congrats!!!

That is an absolutely killer site cheffer! Congrats on your definite 1700's coin, along with all of the colonial artifacts. It's always frustrating when you have to fight through a layer of modern trash...but so, so worth it!

Congrats on the coin! Those buckles are in great shape!

awesome finds, and wtg on the 1700s club

Congrats on breaking into the 1700's club with that coin, and on the rest of your finds.

Great score!! Congrats!!!! I'm barely in the 1800's club.

Awesome finds! I was so happy when I joined the 1800s club I can't imagine the feeling of digging 1700s coin. Congrats!

Nice Steve! There's nothing like early US coinage! You've probably been in the 1700's US coinage club for a while now, but it sure is nice to be able to see the date and that liberty cap.

Congratulations on your liberty bibberty cap! Always a welcome sight. I'd be really careful about the ticks this year. I use sawyer spray on all clothes and equipment and tape the bottom of my pants to my shoes. My hat has the neck cover and everything goes in a plastic bag when done detecting. As soon as possible I shower with dish soap and let it sit for a few minutes. I've had my share of lymes disease and even got an unknow virus (CDC still unknown) that gave me encephalitis. A couple of weeks in ICU was a rude wake up call. The lone star ticks are great hunters and will follow you. With that being said, I'm still out a few times a week in the Jersey pine barrens searching for another LIBERTY BIBBERTY CAP!

It's amazing that you guys in western Mass. are right on the other side of the Taconic mountains from me, and you find all these wonderful early coppers. I find NOTHING on the New York side! I need to put some gas in the car and go over those hills.

That 1700s Liberty Cap LC is a great find Steve, but what I really love is this complete shoe buckle frame! :occasion14:
You're fortunate to have such early settlement history in your area to be able to find these.
Is that a Canadian infiltrator I see hiding amongst the US Militia? :laughing7:

Any interest in trading an 1851 US Trime and a handful of early Canadian 'Dragon Slayer' Halfpennies for this buckle?

Great finds my friend,
Dave
