I do not have pics of my finds yet. I have to get them off of the camera. My doctor told me that I could get out and walk a field now that it has been two weeks since my surgery. I was excited to say the least, especially after all of the rain we received in Central Ky last weekend. I got to my field and the soil conditions were perfect. However, after stepping into the field, I became a little disappointed - footprints. We've all seen it. You get to the field and someone has jumped it. I muttered a few things and proceeded to walk on anyway. There's no way anyone can find them all.
Now I understand that it's basically first come first serve nowadays. Everybody is getting into arrowhead hunting. It's just the situation that I have that drives me nuts. I was out talking to a couple of farmers a couple of years ago. A man walked up and started talking to us. He told us that he lived locally and hunts for arrowheads all the time. I asked him how he had so much free time to hunt. He laughed and said "Boy I'm on disability, so I draw a couple of checks and foodstamps". "I just go around looking for fields to hunt." I started to ask him how he could walk tobacco fields hunting for arrowheads but could not physically work. I told him that he must have a pretty good collection. He said that he did not have a collection. He said that he just hunts for the "Good-uns" (the best arrowheads) and sells them to people in town. He laughed and said that he would then visit the liquor store and his "buddy" to buy a "bag". He patted me on the arm and said "Know what I'm sayin"?
That just really ticked me off! He's on the draw with a fake condition, jumps any field that he can find, and picks up only the best arrowheads that bring money in town so that he can get a case of beer and his bag of dope. The footprints that I saw were probably his since this field can be seen from the road. I still found 5 points, 18 misc. tools, and several brokes. This would fit the description of a "jumper". Leave everything but the best ones and get out of the field as fast as possible. If this would have been someone who halfway cared about indian artifacts and was collecting what he found I wouldn't have minded near as much. It just fires me up when someone goes about it like this guy does!
Sorry to rant. I settled down and enjoyed myself anyway today. It was sunny and 80 plus degrees. I thanked the Lord that I could still hunt artifacts and got excited like a little school kid when I found something, be it arrowhead, scraper, drill or whatever. It was nice to get out after being cooped up in the house for the past two weeks recovering from surgery. I hope to post pics of what I found soon. There's nothing close to a G10 in what I found today, but I'm tickled to death anyway. I made my wife look at them when I got home and listen to my descriptions of what they were used for.
Good luck!
