FINALLY...after 35 years...I dug the HOLY GRAIL of INJUN'S...the 1877. YIPPEE!!!

Sad thing is...it's NASTY...but it is 100% for certain an 1877...as the scan clearly shows. :icon_thumleft:

I couldn't care less about the grade...although it would have been nice if it would have been half as nice as the other two...or half as nice as the reverse.

It's an $850 coin in G-4 good...but this one would probably grade C-1 crappy. :laughing7: Still it ought to be worth a couple hundred bucks.

I told the Yeti today that coins are scarce at this park I took him too...but if we found a coin...it would probably be an old one.

A couple of weeks ago we each found 1860's shield nickels here.

I have popped out some very old Injuns' here over the years..so I put on the 10 x 12 SEF coil. :icon_thumleft: It handles iron much better than the pro coil for me...and just seems to find old green Injuns better than ANY OTHER coil I have. :headbang:

I only found ONLY 3 coins...ALL Injuns'... ALL 1880's or older... ALL less than 7" deep...AND all on edge. :icon_sunny:

Right after I scanned them...I stuck 'em in olive oil so I don't mess them up. :occasion14:

I dug the 1881 Injun'...then less than 14" away...got another sweet hit that sounded between pulltab and injun'. :tongue3:

I wasn't going to admit this 8)...but for a split second...I had second thoughts about digging ::)...but then came to my senses. :icon_thumleft:

NO WAY I pass up this hit....especially when Yeti yells...."Dig that S.O.B" :laughing9:

3 things kept me from passing it up...1) the sound was close enough to an injun' hit to investigate :icon_thumleft: .....2) the cursor did the injun' dance up the stairs to the left  ..3) the hit was only 14" away from where the 1881 popped out of. :hello2:

The Yeti and I pulled it out of the hole and he checked it out. I wasn't even sure it was an injun' for a short while. All we knew was that it was an old penny of some kind.

He spit shined it a little...then I did the same...then we saw the feathers on the head-dress...so we knew I had a "greenie". :blob10:

I then requested that Phil use his top secret, black thick rimmed, super-duper, Mr. Magoo glasses to see what the date was. :laughing7:

He has to be careful with those powerful babies...and take them quickly from the pocket to the eyes. If they catch any sunlight on the way...they burn a hole in whatever they are pointing at. :laughing9: The lenses are about 1/2" thick and heck...you could start a fire with these bad boys. :laughing9:

He glanced at me for a second as I handed him the coin...and I thought he was going to burn a hole in my shirt. ;D

He still couldn't make out the date...so I spit shined it again...then asked to use the goggles. :hello:

When I put the Magoo goggles on myself....the date JUMPED out at me ;D :laughing9: ...and especially the last two numbers...DOUBLE SEVENS :blob8: ....YIPPEE. :notworthy: :icon_thumleft:

My arms and hands were just trembling and shaking. ;D

Again...I know it ain't purty...and in fact is pretty nasty...but is is REAL... I DUG it...it clearly has double 7's....and it's MINE. :headbang:

It's now many hours later...and my hands are still shaking. :D

Another moment I will never forget as long as I live. :icon_thumleft: This hobby has provided me with so many moments over the years. :angel7:

To have 5 hours hunt time at a pounded park.....GREAT :D ..... To find the Holy Grail of Indian head cents....AWESOME :headbang: .....To see Phil break out into the Yeti Dance while wearing his black Mr. Magoo glasses....PRICELESS! :laughing9: :laughing7: :icon_thumleft:

Oh sure first it was like everyone was finding 16-D mercs and now it seems like everyone has a 77 IH? What ever happened to not being able to find the holy grail of each series? What's next 1901-S barber quarters? I think you all need to put your minelabs away and go back to those other detectors. Where at least the coins had a chance of getting overlooked? :dontknow:

Great find also! Now go put it back so someone else can have that great feeling of finding it? :laughing7:

HH,

Dave
Hi Dave. Thanks for responding buddy. Sorry...but I aint puttin' it back. :laughing7:

It doesn't look in too bad shape.
I'd be VERY happy to find that!
Congrats on the sweet digs!
Thanks BK. I'm afraid the front won't clean up any better. It is really worn. The back will though.

Well-deserved. Tell me more about the 10 x 12 coil! I have a few sights that I fight with the iron and the small coil you recommended has been great, but I worry about depth. I might consider grabbing one if they love the injuns that much. Great hunt, congrats!
Mark...the 10 x 12 SEF coil seems to handle the iron better at depth than the pro coil for me. Although the pro coil is a killer coil for me...the SEF coil just doesn't make me chase as many iron pieces. Thanks for responding by the way my friend.

WTG Bryce :hello2: :hello2: I'd say by the green patina color it has it should clean up nicely. I'm hoping for one soon too :o
Thanks CJH. I hope it does...but the front is worn down.

Great find Bryce. If it cleans up ok...you can push that other 1877 right off the banner! Out with the old, in with the new :laughing9:
Thanks buddy. I'd be thrilled if it made banner but if not...that's okay. It was sure a thrill to dig.

The 3 little indians look sweet. Have you had a chance to clean them up yet? Heck, 1877 in any condition would have most of us jumping up and down a bit. When/if you get a chnce to post them after a bit of soaking, definitely do so. They are a nice design to look at!

And Good job recovering them.

Also, hope your Dad is doing well.
Thanks D...and thanks for the wishes for my Dad. He is okay...but not doing as well as I would like.
I have the injuns soaking right now...so we'll see what happens in a few days. Take care.

Great find!!! Had to comment on this find - you wrote a nice post on mine when I found it (also referring to it as the "Holy Grail"!)At least we now know why the 1877 IH is so rare, they scattered most of them all over parks throughout the US so there were none left in circulation!

Welcome to the '77 IH club!

Surprman
Thanks friend. I am glad to be a member of the club. It was a thrill I won't forget.

Thanks. I'm really not worried about cleaning it too much. I soaked it in olive oil overnight and the back is a little better...but not much. As for the front...there's no patina left anyway...so the soaking di nothing for it :laughing7:
