Filene's Restaurant Tag?

Got this at a place that's yielded many relics from the 1900s. The front has what reads

Filene's
96 (then a small letter "F")
Restaurant

I'm assuming it's related to the Filene's department store. Does anyone know what purpose this tag had, and possibly its age?
Was it possibly a tag similar to a deli, where you take a number and wait until it was called?

Thanks for any info!

Filene's Restaurant Tag?

There appears to be writing at the top (above the hole) (Bostons mfg co Boston??) that could help ID where/when the tag was made. Neat piece!

Your hallmark on the tag may be "Robbins Mfg. Co. Boston." Robbins made badges and other metal decorations from 1896-1949ish. Very cool and my vote is coat tag. Sub 8-)

Filene's was on the 7th floor--- next to the designer clothing section of the store.
It was consider an "elegant place to eat" and therefore it's easy to believe the restaurant had a hat and clothing check area where these tags would be either given to the customers or were part of the hangers on which the clothing was connected.
Great piece of Boston history, nevertheless.

You guys are coming up with some great info!

I'm very observant...Was just testing to see if you'd noticed any writing at the top. After breaking out the magnifying glass, it looks like, "J ROBBINS MFG CO BOSTON" all on one line.

There also may be a small "U" or other letter at the very bottom of the tag. Should I get a toothpick and try to clean some of the dirt out of the lettering?

I didn't want to go to crazy with a toothpick for fear of damaging it. Is there anything it can soak in to help loosen up the, corrosion? Maybe a soak in water, or some coca cola? That seems to help clean some brass items.

At least here are some closeup pics of the maker's mark.

Will also try getting in touch with Tag Town tomorrow.

So as we approach a year, I never got a response from Tagtown. Is there another website to check?
