Field of Dreams finds, Silver, tokens and Lots of Wheat's

Hi all, Gary and I hunted our field of dream site this week. We hunted 4 days until it got so hot we couldn't stand it anymore, yeah right, actually we just got plum tuckered out!

I'm including pictures of our finds. I didn't clean the wheat pennies, there were just to many.

Gary found two Half Dollars, a 1945 S Walking Liberty and a 1959 Franklin. He also found three Silver quarters '37, '42,
and a 1925, five Mercury dimes 1918, '20,'25,'40 and 1945, four Roosevelt dimes '53 D, '53 D, '54, and 1958 D, four Buffalo nickels 1928, '28,'35 and 19??. One Saint Christopher, One Colorado Tax token/ one fifth cent Series A-35, One Roman coin (Copy) and 24 Wheat pennies.

found 2 Walking half dollar's 1943 & 1945, two silver Washington quarters 1946 & 1962, Five Mercury Dimes '44 D, '41 S,
'34 D, '40 D & 1944, One Roosevelt Dime 1956 and one War nickel 1943 P, One Ring, One music stand for music instrument, One Ohio Tested & Sealed Tag 034, One Saint Christopher, one 1883 IH and 76 Wheat pennies.

What a week, I think I'll be done for awhile, I go in for Carpal tunnel surgery Tuesday on my left hand and 3 weeks later I get my Right hand done. So I'm leaving some things for you all to find, better hurry though, I'm hoping I'm not down to long.

HH all, Ringfinder
Denny

Outstanding place to hunt. Congrats on the finds. And don't sweat the carpel tunnel surgery. Its a pretty easy surgery, I've had both wrists done. Although it will be its going to take you a few weeks, especially with both hands involved, before you can hang onto a tool. As long as you have a digging pal, you'll be back in the swing in no time.

Great hunt Denny! You definitely did your homework and were rewarded the Silver Star!! ;D Good luck with your surgery...hope your recovery is speedy!

P.S. That squirrel looks as big as a cat! :laughing7:

Without giving any detail to the location of this site can you tell me what research you did and what was the site before it became a lost coin graveyard that made this place such a great find? I am new to the hobby and find it interesting and educational to hear how someone decided to go hunt that field or that grass lot when here in Iowa there are fields and grass lots almost everywhere. I am not wanting to know the location of your silver field just how a person goes about finding a place like this to hunt in the first place? Do they just luck into it or is there certain things that are key to finding such a site?

By the way great finds, however with the number of finds you show I am not sure you are hunting, I would call it gathering coins?

HH, Dave

Well Dave, Believe me we hunted four out of five days last week. We had to take a day off to let our legs rest. For awhile I couldn't hardly get up and down, but when your finding lots of coins, the pain goes away, sort of. LOL

As for research, like I tell anyone who will listen, I use plat maps from the 1860's. I have 5 counties copied and have each township copied also. I look for one room school houses, church's, old log cabin sites, springs, and just about anything else that isn't standing anymore. Anyone can hunt a one room school house that is still standing, the trick is to find the ones that aren't standing. Most guys have no clue how to find them. I don't know about where you live, but here in Ohio a one room school house was put every two miles. When you find one, go two miles in any direction and you will find another one. If you don't see it, get out of your vehicle and look at each corner of the area, look for brick, flag stones anything that looks like something stood on one of the corners.

I really like old church sites, especially the ones that aren't standing. Everyone came to the church to of course worship, also to have wedding's, picnics and just getting together and they all lost something.

Another good place to look is GHOST towns. The ones that aren't standing anymore. Great, Great places to find that elusive old coin.

Just a few suggestions, hope some of them help you find your Field of Dreams. Just remember, research, research, research!

Thanks Susan, I hope all goes well with the surgery. I have put it off for so long, I just couldn't wait any longer. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and refrain from detecting for awhile.

That has been a great site for you guys Denny. No wonder you need CTS surgery-I noticed you waited until you hunted that site out. Great old coin finds. Good luck on your surgery because you have a lot of relics to find in October in Virginia.

Thanks Quindy, I'll be practicing after surgery, I'm sure it will take awhile to get back into the swing of things. Hopefully with four months I should be OK to go in Va.

wow super haul Denny, bet you were tuckered out after all that digging!

I sure was tired, the heat was giving me fits, but with all the finds, Gary and I just kept hitting the place. We usually hunted around 6 hours each day. For a old guy, that's a lot of digging. LOL

How are things over your way, found anymore interesting spots to hunt. Maybe this fall we can hit something together again.

Wow!!.......what a great site!!......love the pics, CONGRATS!!.......I'm sorry if I missed this answer in a previous post but do you know what used to be on this property?

......seems to me a bank exploded there in the 60's.....lol.

Great job to you and your partner.......and as a side note, my uncle has been a mechanic his whole life, thus working with his hands a lot.......he just had both of his hands done and he was back to work very quickly, says it's the best thing he's ever done........good luck with your surgery.

Very nice finds.....

Re: Field of Dreams finds, Silver, tokens and Lots of Wheat's

Brings back alot of memories too me too. I used to get all that in one day. Then go back another day and get just as much. Nice finds. Do you know where a person who has no knees left can go and get new ones for free? Hands are okay, just kneed knees. 44 years of autobody and frame repair have just about done me in. That's why photography and fishing are quickly taking over what I can't do much of in the 'tecting department.......NGE

Thanks for the reply Greg,
Yes I know what was at the site Gary & and I are hunting, but that's about all I'm going to say. LOL

Thanks for the info about your uncle, everyone has told me that it will be OK, I hope so. I hate to miss out on detecting for the summer, but guess I finally have to bite the bullet and do it. I will be hunting in Va. in October, so hope that goes well.

Thanks Joe,
I'll be over your way the end of July. There is a metal detecting hunt at a State Park not to far from
you. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to hunt, but I'm going anyway. My wife and I always enjoy going to Nashville, Indiana.
