I got back to the site where there was an early French site but unfortunately there was a brickworks built on the same site in the early 1900s. I've found several shoe buckles, crusty coppers and other colonial goodies but have not found the main site. It's probably been destroyed long ago but I'll keep searching...

The button is tombac and it's one of the better ones I've found. Nice hand etched design and shank intact. Polished to a silver like finish.

I like buttons and that tombac is certainly a nice example. Keep at it. You'll find the main site eventually.

Yes, I've had many teaser days like that...sure that site is just in a little pocket around that site....

Unfortunately there's a big hole where the clay was dug for the bricks...that's probably where the site was...

Nice tombac! I love finding the ones with incised designs.

That's a nice one Romeo, good to see you were able to get out today. I wasn't so lucky.

Nice tombac.
Only decorated one I got was quite faint.

Sweet tombac! I haven't dug many with designs!

Cheers,

Buck

I always feel good about a site when the tombacs show up. Would they remove the top soil layer to start digging the clay? I suppose in those days it's hard to tell, but it wouldn't surprise me if they relic holding layer was pushed to the side and then pushed back into the pit areas afterwards.
