So, I’m out on my 1750’s permission yesterday with the home owner. We worked together a few years ago and he enjoys metal detecting and uses my ATpro when we hunt there. He has about a half acre field near the house so we decided to kind of grid it. I walked lines east-west and he did north-south. It was a beautiful chilly New England morning with just a light coating of frost as we started around 7:30am. Our paths crossed paths in the middle of the field about 1/3 the way up when he’s said “ hey, check this with your machine” so I did, nice solid 23 on the Nox at 8”. I said I would retrieve it because I had my shovel in my hand. So I did, and out pops a 1821 capped bust dime😳 I had dug a hole 18” away just before that. I spent the rest of the day throwing up in my mouth😒. Out of the three of us that hunt this property, I’m the only one without a silver coin, I did find a melted glob of silver that weighs as much as a dime but that doesn’t count in my book. I didn’t get a picture of the obverse (phone died, puked on it😔) anyway, I spent the rest of the day digging memorials, wheats, IHP’s and V nickels. I will be back bright and early next Saturday to get my silver coin. However, big congrats to him, he was genuinely excited because he only finds giant iron stuff.

Wow, I'd say you are next for silver so go get it!

Ouch! I feel your puke, my friend. :laughing7: It is what it is, though...and it happens. The next silver coin is yours, so clean the vomit off your phone, and be ready to snap some pics.:occasion14: I'm always genuinely happy when a buddy finds a nice silver...sincerely...but I'd be genuinely happiER if it found it's way under my coil instead.:laughing9: Now on the real side...congrats to your buddy...and yes, I'd sincerely be happy for him.:headbang:

It's all good no matter. Hunting with friends always makes me swing a bit harder. We dont always get the trophy, but that's good in it's way. Sounds like a very productive hunt for the both of ya.

Very Nice Silver!!! Congrats!!! Keep that coil to the soil!!!! Yours is Coming!!!!!

Wow, thats rough! Such a beautiful coin. dont worry, your silver is coming!

I read the heading "Feeling sick" and looked at the coin- Didn't even have to read the rest, I could tell how the story ended.

A few years ago I took a friend who was new to detecting to one of my spots. After a few minutes he came over to me smiling, with a Barber half dollar in his hand!

I couldn’t believe my eyes! I had detected this spot several times, how could I miss that?

It’s tough being torn between being happy for your friend, and kicking yourself for missing a coveted target.

All you can do is be happy for him, and just keep on digging.

Well, your partner dug a very nice old dime ,we don't see many of those posted. Next hunt there it wiil be your turn for old silver.

That's....a beautiful dime. Congrats to your friend. It's funny how a couple of inches, one way or the other, can make or break a hunt. Your turn at the silver trough is coming up next!

Hey, better than finding it yourself only for the homeowner to claim it as their own and take it, right? What a cool coin. Congrats to your friend and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that there is another one out there for you.

He wouldn’t do that, last time I was there I pulled a 1824 largie out, I offered to him and said “ nope, you found it, you keep it”. However, we are in negotiations for a trade for that dime. He told me to bring trade barter next Saturday sooooooooooooo...........I have a really shiny peace dollar I would trade. We’ll see, I may hunt all day and see if I can dig one myself. If I had dug that coin, I would have dug cap bust, seated, barber, merc and Rosie within 3 weeks.
Maybe next time.

Sounds like a good guy. I’ve definitely heard stories of landowners just claiming things when they are shown to them. I guess if you don’t set clear guidelines or don’t know them well you leave yourself up to that fate and possibility. Good luck out there next week!

One of my old hunting pals always finds better goodies than i do when we hunted. Doesn't matter where we went. I think he had found some coin karma somewhere....... :)

I told him I’d kill him and bury him in the yard if he even looked at my stuff, lol, I didn’t say that, I have it tattooed on my neck

Your time will come , up in the land of IH LC & V Nickles , oh I still in 20 years have never dug a LC ( I must travel NE or E or SE but my $ won't let me.).

1821 Would be an awesome date to dig , maybe you will get a Draped Bust from that site ...(Low & Slow as you know ). :coffee2:

Yeah... but you found a silver glob and they didn't.

:)

Ouch! I feel your pain JD. Well, if there’s one there should be another. Hopefully. Good luck!

It happens man.

I've located so many nice sites over the years and have shared with my hunting buddies family members etc.

I've watched people at my sites pull amazing finds. It is tough sometimes to deal with.

As time went on and I made so many amazing finds over the years I started to think about it differently.

We aren't always going to get our coils over every treasure. I started to look at it like there was no guarantee I was going to find that specific item.

I started being happier knowing that the history was recovered even if it wasn't by me it was saved re guardless.

I joke with my wife all the time while hunting. I say to her I don't care what you dig but if a gold coin shows it's face on my sites while I am digging for you and you using my ctx I'm claiming it lol.

However in the last 26 years of hunting and over a million holes dug one has not shown it's face as of yet.

Hang in there you may find something even older and better on that property.

Jer

Just think... it could have been worse...

Imagine when the news broke of the Staffordshire Horde find to the guys who all hunted that field several times over and found only bits of rust.

Sheesh and your crying over a "dime" :P

j.k :)
