I found this near Fort Dodge while detecting an area where I usually find relics from the 1850's-1860's. Is it a piece from some farm machinery?

Darn, and I was gonna make an obscure reference to the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch and the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog!

Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Basic training practice grenade. I remember the ones we used had the bottom open to release any pressure I am assuming and to be easily reloaded with a small blasting cap only.
just my 2 cents

Ive been searching quite a bit on this one, i`m doubting grenade (not discounting it) because of the plate in the middle that has a hole in it, that "through" hole tells me it was meant to stop at a certain point, like on a threaded rod that has washer/bolster for depth. Then another piece screwed in/on. (decorative)

All the grenades i looked at needed room for a fuse/detonator so most appeared hollow.

But it does look heavy, and broke jagged like cast iron. Interesting piece nonetheless.

(cactus? a whole new area to search  )
