Hello All,

Got out with Hill Billy for a hunt today. Went to track down the owner of the first site I wanted to find, and ended up talking to a farmer (who didn't own the site that we wanted to get on). Well...the farmer told us about an old homestead out in his hay field...so we got permission to take a swing there. Hunted for a while, but only came up with a few flat buttons. So we then got a little sidetracked and skipped the site I wanted to find--ending up at a nice farmer's house that has already given us permission for two additional sites on his farm (once the mud dries up so we can get the truck out to them).

Got on a spot in his pasture and found the homestead with no difficulty. HB went one direction and I the other, and he walked right into it, digging an oil lantern piece right off. :headbang: It was a nice day out--Finally. :)

We dug a few buttons, a spoon, and a few odds and ends. HB dug a rather cool iron relic that I really hope is what we think it is... More on that later. I'm sure he'll post it. Anyhow, so we were getting down to the wire and the targets getting thin. We were wondering if we'd chosen two not-so-great spots out of all the possibilities in my files of research... Then I got a good hit--an unforgettable signal on the 1266-X. It was sweet, solid, and not a huge overload or shallow piece of junk. And so I started chanting "Come on--Be a coin!" When I scooped one really deep scoop out of the pasture, I waved the coil over the 8 inch plug and "BANG!" the hit was strong. This was a coin. I called HB over and said "You tell me what this is."

"Silver Dime" he said. :hello2: So I took the top clod and turned it over...and saw this:

When I removed it, enough of the mud came off that I could see the date of 1840 staring me in the face! And a full "LIBERTY" on the shield! This is by FAR my Finest early seated I have ever dug. The late date ones I find in decent shape from time to time, but she's a beauty.

Here are the rest of the finds, before cleaning:

And the Seated Beauty. 1840-O.

What can I say Buckles? You found one pretty lady. Next time you call me over to swing the XLT over and tell you what it is, I think I will have to confiscate the find. Sorry I didn't post my finds on here yet, but I will this evening after work. Look forward to getting out again soon.

What's this world coming to? You can't keep that beautiful, pristine silver dime. You are BUCKLEBOY...BUCKLE? Get it? Not Dimeboy.
I'll PM you my addy so you can send me that dime. Pay no attention to the word Gold in my username.

Awesome finds!!!

Another good post BB, nice to see a very nice dime come out and an earlier seated to boot. Check your e-mail!

Don

That dime is GORGEOUS. I think I would have fallen over digging that up. Great story and find!! We're you guys hunting right along side the cows?

Well, if I've got your envy then I know I'm doing OK. :) Good to hear from you, my friend.

BB,
You big dog!!! Beautiful old silver there buddy. :hello2: I bet that was a pretty sight in that dirt clod.
Congrats & glad to see you out swinging again,
Doug

Nah, HB is still the Hound Dog. We did manage to get permission for a 1700s cabin site yesterday too, so I think it was a good day all around. This is one of the first days without frozen ground or snow piled on since early January. Even though it's eaten up most of the spring window, I hope that's the last of the cold and snow.

whoa that is nice. You don't dig them that nice very often.

Very true. I had a few nice late date seateds, but no nice early ones until now.

That is a beautiful seated, BB!

But the first thing you're supposed to do when you dig a coin like that is give it a vigorous rub with your gloved hand to get the dirt off. Everyone knows this.

MP

LOL glad I didn't field clean it.

I call BS on that one, I know you just minted that coin in your garage. Man that coin must have been lost the day after it was minted. Nice.

Yep. You caught me. I have the minting machine out there. :)

Now that is a beautiful seated dime. :icon_sunny: Fresh off the mint. That had to be dropped when it was brand spanking new. 8)

You guys amaze me, you take an iffy day and make it shine. That's what it's all about. I've heard through the grape vine that Hill Billy has a nose like a hound dawg for finding these old sites and I'm beginning to believe the rumor. :D I'll be watching for his post.

Good luck next trip finding the site that was the original target. :)

Randy

That Hill Billy is one heck of a hunter. If I give him an inch, he takes a mile--and I end up skunked. So that's why I go into Super Digger mode when I hunt with him. He's too good with that XLT. And he's got an intuition for finding sites, and also finding additional new sites on the same property when we're out.

You weren't kidding. That is a beautiful coin. :icon_thumleft: I will be digging somewhere this weekend, and I will be making a post no matter what. Nice job, my friend!!! :headbang: I can't wait til we're diggin' next weekend.

Happy Hunting!!! :hello:
Cm2db

Good luck on your hunt, Coinmaster! I can't wait until next weekend either. If those sites are as good as we think they will be, then we may have to spend the rest of the spring on them. Ready to play hooky from work to hunt a site? I will if you will.

That is one of the finest, if not the finest looking dug seateds I have ever seen posted here. Thats a great coin. The other stuff you can just throw back! Haaaaaa... Just kidding.. I bet that seated is around $200 to $300 coin..Major congrats. The entire post was just a great read and a great view. jgas

The rest of the items aren't much, but I post everything except the scrap iron and lead that I dig. Thank you for your kind reply, my friend.

I could tell from our messaging that you were about to bust to get out. You got out in GRAND style with HB. That coin looks AU grade to me. You have set the bar on grade pretty high for yourself for the rest of 2010. Congrats and HH Buddy.

I have been dying--wasting away stuck indoors during the snow. This is already turning into an interesting year. Several hunts in, I have a nice Barber, a beautiful early Seated, and a Gold class ring. Coinmaster has a beautiful pre-CW Seated, and HB has a half real. No LC's yet, but perhaps I spent all my large copper mojo last year by digging 20 of them. ::) Anyhow...coins are great, but now I'd like some nice relics. :)

Deno said:
BB, Seated is always welcome. The O's can be tricky, large and small.
I looked yours up in Walter Breens and there is a tall narrow O listed as
very rare. I never even heard of that one until now. I don't think that's what you have but it's still sweet.

I have seen the different O sizes. My last 1840-O dime was a small O (tiny, really). This one is obviously a very different die variety.

Absolutely. "Let the Digging Begin!" :icon_thumleft: It'll be planting time soon, and I have to make up for a lost month.

That is a super find BB.

Wish I was out hunting right now. Soon though it is melting away quickly.

HH Jer

Good to hear that it is melting up there. The ground should be thawed pretty much everywhere by this weekend.

Cheers,

Buckles

WOW!!!!!!!! GORGEOUS!

Ok guys, as promised here are my finds for the day. I can't touch the pretty lady but I can say I found a first. I dug two flat buttons and the gold plated pocket watch cover and the pocket pistol grip all in one hole. Was a good day out hunting yesterday and can't wait to get back out and try and top the pretty lady.
BBoy she is one fine looking coin, I'm glad you pulled her from the worm entrenched soil before we gave up.

Anyone wanna play some Quarters?

It's one of those things. You must sit back, look around and smell the cow dung. You then say where would I have built a house back in the day? Over yonder.
