Hey everyone. I found these flat buttons a while back. They are very small. The one with the missing shank actually has writing on the front. I can't make it out.... Almost like excel something. also has stars all the way around the rim on the back. Maybe one of you button guys can help me out. Found in sw Virginia. Thanks ! :)

You may be seeing Excelsior and may have an early New York one piece militia button. Tough to say since I cannot make out any detail from the pics you provided. Using a digital camera in the macro mode would be very helpful.

Tried to zoom in some.

And lightened it up some :)

You should try a peroxide soak with a little brushing, then lay flat to dry (no rinsing) in an attempt to thin the green.

Thanks for trying to get a closer shot. I just can't get enough detail to make any guess. Maybe one of the other guys can recognize some feature on it.

You are battling two strikes against you, elemental effects from the ground and the button being very worn. I dug a NY militia one piece button that was so worn that at first I thought it was a flat button.
