Based on the pictures it looks plated, how do you get solid 14K gold?

I can def see where you think it looks plated though! That is corrosion on the outside of it that I'm afraid to scrape at it too hard because I don't want to ruin the piece

Corrosion on gold? Not around here. Even if it was in a lake for 100 years.

That tested Positive for 14k? Im hoping for you case its the real deal, But i dont even see Gold on it....Gold should never have any corrosion...At first glace it looked like a ring that was under a road or something and filled up with asphalt.....Good luck in figuring this out!

I had a gold coin with a stain on it, that kind of looked like corrosion and was told the stain didn't affect the value, and not to try and remove it. The coin sold for a heck of a lot more than melt value. Seems to me it could be gold and looks to be about the size of a $1 coin.

You must have tiny $1 coins over there!!

You must have insanely large gold coins over there!!

American gold currency has always been pure, or near-pure gold, rather than an alloy. That would be why our $1 gold coin was so small.

If indeed it is solid 14k, it looks like someone used a torch to melted down some 14k jewelry into a small ingot?

I wish we did have them :laughing7:

I read that your $1 coins are 13mm to 15mm in diameter so I see that dimension is possibly correct, BUT at 90% purity, if it was a gold dollar, it should have rung in at about 22K not the 14K as measured.
While I can't readily find information on the thickness of the gold dollars, I doubt if they are as thick as the found item.
Plus there is no reeded edge on the found item.
So, to me, it indicates that it is not a gold dollar.

A further thought regarding if it could be a button battery. It might actually be a standard battery which was seated in a gold plated battery holder, which has been heated (burnt?) and the gold has melted onto the battery?
I don't know.

Cheers, Mike

I agree with you on thickness, reeded edge, and the 22K part, in fact I said "about the size of a dollar coin." I don't think it's an American coin, not with the word "Goddess" on it for sure, but perhaps a foreign coin. ??? Although 14K seems to indicate jewelry more than a coin. I think there needs to be further testing to make sure it's for a fact solid 14K and not just plate that is being rubbed off for the test. Just because it's stained doesn't make it not gold, but wouldn't rule out further testing.

kool how thick is it, mom had a hearing aid with a battery, something like that back in the early 90s
and it was gold plated, the grove in 1st pic below, makes it look like a button battery

Kathy, I agree with Bosnmate in that 14k is for jewelry, not coins, plus it looks too thick to be a coin. Is there a point of attachment like for a charm or pendant? I realize you tested it, but if I were you, I'd take it to a jewelry or pawn shop and get them to test it again. I look forward to hearing more about your find.
