I'm usually working until dark every day. My shop is across from the cemetery, so I see this city employee doing the same most every day trying to keep up with the grass and all. A couple of days ago, he's out there in the hotass sun, pulling weeds out of the lots. I can't really say it about the other workers in town, but this one is always hard at it. I had to run to town and on the way back, I pulled in to where he's still out in the heat, pulling weeds. I went up to him and talked for a while, and told him how much I appreciated his hard work and handed him a C-note. I just felt like he needed to know that somebody notices his efforts. Aside from his job, he's helped me out before when I've been in a tight. Of course, I did tell him when he's out in the dirt fixing water lines and stuff, to keep an eye out for old bottles. I'm always teling folks that, but never expect anything to come of it.
Anyway, this morning pretty early, I was getting started with my work and he pulls into the yard. I went out to see what's up and he said he was cleaning out the garage for this old widow in town and said there were some bottles. Said they were on a trailer over at the sewage pond and whatever I didn't want was gonna be hauled to the dump. I hopped in my truck and headed that way, not expecting a whole lot.
I got there and here's this flat trailer piled with junk. I started going through it. A pile of more recent bottles, a heap of hobbleskirt Cokes (no 1915s or 1923s) then I pull out a Duffy's Whiskey. Common as heck, but at least it's old, so that gave me hope. Then I pull out a straight-side Coke, perked up and kept digging. Before it was over with, I found 6 straight-sides, 2 Ross's Belfast round bottoms (gave one to my cousin, Ross), several gun stocks including a couple of RH, left-eye dominant stocks and even two detachable shoulder stocks for Thompson submachine guns. (The lady's husband was a retired Merchant Marine who had a monstrous collection of primarily military weapons.) Even found a stock to fit my old Savage .22 over 410, which I cleaned with 0000 steel wool and Liquid Gold and slapped it on. Also bound for the landfill were a couple of nice tabletop display cases with keys, a security cabinet with keys. A little rusty, but who cares? Four flag stands, more bottles and other stuff...
It was a lot of fun going through!
