I'm usually working until dark every day. My shop is across from the cemetery, so I see this city employee doing the same most every day trying to keep up with the grass and all. A couple of days ago, he's out there in the hotass sun, pulling weeds out of the lots. I can't really say it about the other workers in town, but this one is always hard at it. I had to run to town and on the way back, I pulled in to where he's still out in the heat, pulling weeds. I went up to him and talked for a while, and told him how much I appreciated his hard work and handed him a C-note. I just felt like he needed to know that somebody notices his efforts. Aside from his job, he's helped me out before when I've been in a tight. Of course, I did tell him when he's out in the dirt fixing water lines and stuff, to keep an eye out for old bottles. I'm always teling folks that, but never expect anything to come of it.

Anyway, this morning pretty early, I was getting started with my work and he pulls into the yard. I went out to see what's up and he said he was cleaning out the garage for this old widow in town and said there were some bottles. Said they were on a trailer over at the sewage pond and whatever I didn't want was gonna be hauled to the dump. I hopped in my truck and headed that way, not expecting a whole lot.

I got there and here's this flat trailer piled with junk. I started going through it. A pile of more recent bottles, a heap of hobbleskirt Cokes (no 1915s or 1923s) then I pull out a Duffy's Whiskey. Common as heck, but at least it's old, so that gave me hope. Then I pull out a straight-side Coke, perked up and kept digging. Before it was over with, I found 6 straight-sides, 2 Ross's Belfast round bottoms (gave one to my cousin, Ross), several gun stocks including a couple of RH, left-eye dominant stocks and even two detachable shoulder stocks for Thompson submachine guns. (The lady's husband was a retired Merchant Marine who had a monstrous collection of primarily military weapons.) Even found a stock to fit my old Savage .22 over 410, which I cleaned with 0000 steel wool and Liquid Gold and slapped it on. Also bound for the landfill were a couple of nice tabletop display cases with keys, a security cabinet with keys. A little rusty, but who cares? Four flag stands, more bottles and other stuff...

It was a lot of fun going through!

Karma is right. Man those are some real beauties. I have the same story but mine was a permission. I’ve had my eye on this 1820 house for awhile that was up for sale. I’d pass down that street every so often to see if any action was happening. Well one day I saw the new owners outside working on the house and noticed their license plate from North Carolina . Now it’s hot as hell here and the humidity will choke a horse. So I did what any good Southerner would do and ran to the store a bought them 2 gallons of Louisiana finest Sweet Tea made with real sugarcane not that artificial crap. Well they loved it and the gesture and I’m detecting there 8 acre 1820’s home tomorrow. God is good. Congratulations on your good deed[emoji1317]

Chip, I almost fell over when I read this! I always thought I was the only weirdo that is RH, LE dominant!!! Can't catch! Can't throw! Took me forever to figure out why I don't shoot very well. I'm not a gun nut but have a few. None of them seem to fit "right."

Nice Karmic Haul! Congratz.

I am totally overwhelmed. This is simply amazing. Well done, and I hope that someday I can post something like this!

I would be grinning ear to ear just to have gotten the items on any of your pictures . So great job on your success at doing the right thing just for doing the right thing

You have the "scourge" for shooting. My brother has it too. A very poor shot. I got lucky. I'm left-handed but right eye dominant and shoot right handed. You would not want me shooting at you.

Why in the world do people save toasted wood blanks like that? I found a bunch myself. They were all soaked with something gooey and worthless. Gary

My guess would be Cosmoline that was used to protect firearms from moisture, salt, corrosion, etc. when shipped overseas. You're right, it's gooey, but effective.

Wow, those old Coke bottles are older than any of them I have dug. Congrats on all those old bottles .

Very nice finds. That was worth the trip over to check it out. I like all those bottles.

Never mind the sweet finds, what an awesome thing for you to do. Two thumbs up!!

That's a good day! I see Dublin & Macon what other towns were among them?

Thanks, brother. I always thought I was doing good to find just one straightside. L to R: Helena; Macon; Rock Hill, SC; Tampa, FL; Dublin; Macon. The Rock Hill is a pretty bottle with that blue aqua glass, more than likely blown at the Laurens (SC) Glassworks.

.

Good stuff sandchip. You never know what you are going to find in those old garage cleanouts.

I see that one variation of the Helena coke is listed as scarce.
