Several artifact forums are slammed in this television and written report on artifact looting. IMHO, without any evidence, highly inflammatory accusations are leveled against collectors. Images were captured and posted from several artifact collecting forums, including this forum, TreasureNet:

Archaeologists: Looters posting pics of Native American artifact - CBS News 8 - San Diego, CA News Station - KFMB Channel 8

Collecting on private land is different from taking from public property. This article doesn't make any clear distinction between the two implying that all collecting is bad.

Oh, but is ok to clear-cut forests, bull doze the property, (tell your employees to keep their mouths shut if an NA site is discovered which happens about everywhere so there will be no delays), then rapidly build 100s of houses or whatever, destroying any evidence of NA life....forever! Like a lot of news, they are just pushing a very one sided point, lumping all collectors into the same basket and some people will say "look at what those terrible people do!".

They refuse to believe the majority of us collected our artifacts on private land, they say take a picture of the artifact then put it back. Museums are full of artifacts collected by archaeologists sitting in cardboard boxes in back rooms of the museums..

That's just out of touch. 'Looters' and pothunters aren't going after artifacts so they can post pics on the internet for bragging rights. They go after them for profit, they're criminals and know they're breaking the law, so they're not going to attract attention to their finds. Everybody I see on here has great respect for the folks who lived here before us, and the majority seem to be more interested in furthering knowledge of how prehistoric people lived, and preserving their artifacts for all to see. So what next, maybe 60 Minutes does 'rock, treasurenet tomb raider exposed!!'?

I've learned so much since starting this hobby 2 years ago. Being an avid outdoorsman, this hobby has given me a tremendous amount of respect for their way of life here for thousands of years. There is as much time researching/learning as their is "looting". You think these pipeliners tell anyone about the stuff they dig up anymore? nope, because their operation would be shut down, not to mention the artifacts those people loot which are more likely to be burial or "significant" pieces anyways. Hunting artifacts that have been banged around by farm equipment for 100+ years on property I have permission to hunt on seems pretty reasonable to me.

This is all a big ole bucket of BS, but it will make people who don't know any better believe what they are saying. That's why it is good to contact lawmakers on this subject to help protect collecting and also why I only show a little at a time. The next thing is Civil War artifact hunters are digging up dead folks to get their goods. Were will this BS stop( shut my hole).:BangHead:

One more thing ,this just proves big brother or some jackleg is watching you when you are on line.

The problem is some people are looters I could guess but very few.And they are not posting here.We do not endorse looting of any graves or allow it on this forum but hunting private land and walking a bean field is not illegal period. Most walk plowed fields or old creek beds on private property. That is legal.

The article was a hit piece out of California.

They need to look on e-bay as every point for sale is so so perfect and looks like burial goods instead of attacking forums where people want to learn and share information of their legal finds.

Yes, unfortunetily there are people that loot for profit and break the law, but that applies to anything that can be sold. Human organs are harvested for profit, endangered species etc...Like Tnmountains said, look to the people looking to sell, not the hobbyists.

I cant help but think a past member was on the sites and posted what he or she thought were artifacts and of course we told them natural rocks. We dont ask people to tell where they work so maybe one of these people that posted rocks got their feelings hurt and decided to get pay back in the worst way. I watched the video but my sound doesnt work for some reason. Im sure all of this will get straightened out in a good way. Thats why I always use a disclaimer at the bottom of my signature , rock

Typical leftist tactics to shut down anything wholesome, truth and facts be damned.

She is out of her mind... I want to see her collection of artifacts.. I also would like to know how many of thousands of artifacts are buried in the basements of museums and universities. Leave them for the future generations ..Well I am the future generation. If I see a point on the surface or pottery sticking out of the ground I am picking them up. If the case can be made that an item is a grave item it will need substantial history that in most cases the item has been discovered in graves. .. what she is trying to accomplish by saying vessels are grave goods is BS ... Trying to keep the collectors away of such collecting. The world is up side down . Later .. jim

This ^ Not to mention the .gov sells the land to private developers (for profit) thereby skirting any laws pertaining to artifacts.

I can't seem to let this video get out of my head because it burns me up.:censored:
1st It's one sided like most news reports are.
2nd These archaeologist are going for their 5min of fame.
3rd Any archaeologist that is worth their salt will tell you that an artifact that is in a creek or a disturb strata of soil has lost it's use to them because it can not be placed in a time line with other items.
4th Them saying just leave the artifact laying where you found it ,is like telling them if you walk up on a $100 bill just leave it there so some one else can see it.
5th JMO The pot they show as it could have held human remains is not large enough for that type of pottery, but if it is then 90% of all pots in museums could have held human remains. So in my opinion all pottery vessels in museums should be put back where they were found.(fat chance that will happen )

An last if you ever come up on a grave site , by all state laws you have to report it. By doing this you could be helping uncover a lost village site that archaeologist have been looking for or you could be reporting a crime site that would help the local police.
Real archaeologist have learned that by working with the local collector they find out more info than they ever could, because most states don't have the money to pay someone just to be looking around for sites. When you collect artifacts you may not think this way, but you represent a whole collection of people that do the same. So do it right and legal an read the laws of the state that you are in and by doing your collecting in this manner you show a great respect for all collectors, future collectors and this hobby.

you gotta remember...EVERYTHING you read on the internet is written from a certain point of view and is trying to sell you something...e
very news story, every comment, every movie review. Once you realize that it becomes easier to mine out the facts of an article and ignore all the adjectives and adverbs. Gone are the days of reporting a story just to get the facts out...and it's not just Fox news either...it is everybody.
