Explorer SE meets " THE PICNIC GROVE " .................SILVER

Went over to ' THE PICNIC GROVE " to introduce the Explorer SE to it.
( Only got out for about an hour and a half before the rain came )
I really have to get use to hearing " A LOT " of " TRASH signals
I dug several low tone signals in hopes of finding a nickel but never did, only pull tabs.
The 4th target gave off a nice flutie signal that broke into a low tone too. After a couple more sweeps
with the coil I decided that I liked the high tone and dug it.
About 5 inches down I saw the coin and the foil.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
SWEET!!!!!! A MERC !!!!!    (#60 Silver Coin for the year , 40 more to go )
Also pulled a No Cash Token from about 6 inches deep.

From hunting with the XLT  I know there is a lot of trash to pick between for a good signal.
                                     QUESTION ???
Can I get some suggestions as how to work the trashier areas with the SE.
I'm using a 8 inch coil. I have a 5 inch coil too.
Do you think that 5 inch coil might help out better?
How about different setting too.

Thanks
Been doing this grove for 2 years back in 86-87 and now since 2006
many great finds have come out of here.

Yes, I have the answer for you. That 8 inch coil is no good. Unload it on some poor unsuspecting hunter - like er, Kimsdad for instance. Yes, give it to him!

Nice digs, Bob, congrats on yet another gorgeous Merc!

I went out this morning to an old park near me on a silver hunt & got skunked by the rain... :(

SB, you might take a look over Minelab way and see how DFX_Gregg is doing with his.
He's a great fellow sharing advice.

And the Michigan Badger is running a Minelab, now, also.
He will definitely post everything he learns for us.

..But I'm really concerned about that pretty girl Jo...

the 8" coil is good but the 5" coil will be able to get in even tighter spots, and get between thicker trash. give it a try.

Nice finds and I do love those Mercs...Gotta be the best looking coin the US minted. Looks like the ML is doing well for ya..keep it up.

Re: Explorer SE meets " THE PICNIC GROVE " .................SILVER

congrats! :) I would just learn all of the sounds and once you get all of the trashy signals out of the way you can go for the good stuff! :) Or you can try and discriminate things out like pulltabs and bottle caps.

Re: Explorer SE meets " THE PICNIC GROVE " .................SILVER

Nice going again, Bob!!

You're finding the silver in well hunted/trashy areas with your new machine. You're catching on very well.

I've never used a 5" coil, and I've hunted in some pretty nasty/trashy ground conditions. I've been able to pick out good signals with my 8" very well in these areas without sacrificing depth. I think you just need to hunker down and listen to all those signals to get the better stuff. Definitely don't add more discrimination to reject the trash signals. You'll just get more nulling, and you'll have to swing even slower to hear the signals next to the nulling threshold.

Congrats,
