I've got two finds I haven't been able to ID. The first looks like maybe a very old odd bullet I found it at a site where we've found early 1800 buttons and a CW general service button and my Second carbine sling buckle. I just don't know much about bullets. HELP! I've placed a dime in the pic just for size reference. The pin I posted in today's finds and haven't had much feed back on. I thought maybe in the what is it would be a better place for this little dandy. Please reply if you can offer any info. :) Pictures taken in different lights you'll notice the top pic has a differnt color. Top pic is also the best side of the maybe Bullet.

The bullet looks like it tried to go through something it couldn't penetrate such as a rock? Open base with exosed lead and solid copper jacket is fairly common among military type bullets. That second item is a beauty although I can't help you with it. Monty

ok.. I'll take a shot.. it looks like there is still some dirt in the hole on the bullet? Is there?? it "almost" looks like it was pulled.. and then maybe it was carved on after he pulled it from the weapon.. it is a guess... It is all lead??

I agree that it was used as a pinback although I am not positive it started as one. The button front is a post-civil war eagle service button for enlisteds. The standing neck on the eagle is called a "chicken" by collectors because the it looks less regal than an eagle with its neck stretched like that! It is possible someone applied the pinback early on to wear in support of a loved one in the service?? The pinback is an early 20th/ late 19th century style. I suppose it is also possible that Waterbury or another federal contract company manufactured it as a pinback but I am no expert and have never heard of one.
