Was introduced to this years ago and have kept it around ever since. Just clean the button in warm water with a soft bristle tooth brush to remove as much as possible then take same brush and apply birch wood Casey's gun blue and rust remover. Let sit for about five to ten seconds then gently brush it around for a bit and rinse off. It does not harm the patina,it actually darkens and enhances patina. It works on all kinds of stuff. Found at Walmart or gun stores. Give it a try.on buttons with gilt it will get the gunk off but if too aggressive it will lose some gilt. Be careful.
