Ever have a panhandler try to get change from you while detecting?

Spending most of my time living in my truck and traveling around the country I run into quite a few people looking for spare $$. I do not carry cash, but I have a large supply of tuna and soup and sodas that I hand out. Some months I go through a hundred or so cans of soup, like progresso the good stuff not that watery cambell junk and tuna. Very seldom have I had anyone walk away saying they wanted money. I always tell em I do not carry $$, but I will feed em. It is amazing how many people there are out there that do not have anything. And I am talking not only about "bums", but whole families living in cars or tents. You can feed alot of people for just a couple of bucks with tuna and soup and those cupa noodles, you can get cups noodles for 5 for a 1$, kids love em.

My advice to people is carry an extra can of tuna or soup in your trunk and if you are approached make the offer. Alot of people need the help and it is good Karma.

Nice to see this thread revived, and with some very nice input.

I had to chuckle the other day, there was a rather scruffy looking gent sitting on a bench at stop light with a carboard sign: "Why lie, I want a beer!"

Had I had any with me, he would have earned it for his honesty.

Yep Kev

That man Definately Deserved a Beer.

I hope he got one :)

Omnicognic...I like the gift certificate idea and will put it into practice. As well as Vrent's idea of a few soup/tuna cans in the trunk.? There are many Eastern Europeans who are down on their luck here in GE and I see many of them when I'm out-n-about.

Thanks for the ideas.

By the way, one of the best bumper stickers I ever saw was "Don't let your Karma run over my Dogma".? Think about it <SMILE>

After attending my friends wedding in San Jose, CA a few years ago, a bunch of us went out to a club for some drinking. After a while, I was feeling pretty good and being I had never been to CA, I decided I wanted to do some exploring of Central San Jose. So I got back out on the street and start walking around. Now, I am originally from Connecticut, where #1 the entire population of the state, is approximately the combined population of the three cities San Jose, San Fransico, and Oakland, and #2 you can not buy alcohol after 8 pm, or on Sundays, or on holidays, so this is another world for me. Well, its somewhere around 2 am and I'm just wandering around, and I am amazed at what is open so early in the morning. Well, I was feeling like another beer, so I found a deli type store that was open. Out in front of the deli was a guy looking in the garbage can for cans and bottles to return. I walked up to him and said "hey, isn't this amazing? There are places open to get beer this late at night." The guy looked at me like I had three heads, but was polite about it. We started talking and I immediately took a liking to him, so I said, "hey come on inside with me, and I'll buy you a beer." He says, "I'd rather have something to eat instead." So, I brought him inside, bought us both each a sub and a beer to wash it down with.

I was hunting in the park in downtown Waterloo IA with my Brother-in-law. A guy came over to try to sell me some drugs. I pointed to my Briother-in-law and said that maybe he would be interested. You should have seen the look on his face when the guy approached him.
I was rolling on the ground laughing.

Not while detecting. But I go to a liquor store/market around the corner from my workplace at break. Get hit up about once a week for spare change. Obvious they have drinking problems. Have to say no or I would go broke and have to join them.

Not MDing, but while I was working under cover at the bus station, I had a panhandler try to sell me some "hot" watches out of a brief case. Showed me some "Rollux" watches. (note the spelling) They were those cheap Mexican watches that are worth about two bucks each. I told him I only had a few bucks in pocket change. He said he'd take what I had in my pocket for one. I had a gun in one pocket and a badge in the another! I thought he was going to have a heart attack! He caught the next bus out of town. He didn't really want to but he did! JIM

Oh yes !!
They zero in as soon as you start detecting, mixed bag of some nice, some bad, some sad. Last trip to the downtown square area a
Guy walks up and states due to bad luck on a house painting job he was a little short and needed eight dollars to get a room for the night. Could he trade me a box of mac and cheese (he had a small assortment of shoplifted items to turn into cash) for the money ? I said no, it was Thursday night, I didn't get paid till Friday so I didn't have money for him.
After working as a second shift weld shop supervisor in a bad section of town, I've heard every " I just need ten dollars" story ever told.
When they are looking around the magic ten dollar mark ... they are buying CRACK ! :o
Even after he was told not to, I had a welder buy some two for ten dollars ( stolen ) vice grips one night. He told the guy he was interested in buying more of his stuff, so... The next night, in the shadows of the back lot another deal was made. The welder who was so proud of the deal he got the night before was now the proud owner of blank VCR tapes with porno labels taped on them and a child's silver pot metal cap gun wrapped in a cloth rag. All for the extremely low price of $90.00 cash. ;D

no panhandlers yet but from the research results i have been getting,it looks like it could be a real possibility soon! the older sections of my town are almost all ghettos now.it makes it hard to find suitable spots to hunt with all of that concrete. also the city is real protective over the historic landmarks and areas. they make it difficult to detect around them.I'm on a constant sidewalk tear up vigil though! sooner or later ill get under the radar!!

No panhandlers but I have made some change for a carny he gave me some silver dollars :o for quarters to make a phone call home .
